I wish more sites would made it clear whether they accepted folding campers, I find I end up e-mailing to ask, as the symbols only usually have caravan, motor home or tent. We e-mailed one site recently and had to explain what our unit was like, only to be turned away when we got there, by a very rude man.

Us who own FCs (as I did) come on here and share with other FC owners and think that everybody knows about them and their needs, but in fact, sad as it may seem, many do not, have never seen one and certainly would not know how to cater for one, especially camp site owners.

Although they have the same footprint as a caravan, on a number of occasions on arriving at a site, the owner/warden would take one look at our FC trailer and try to place us on a very small pitch until we explained that unfolded, our Pathfinder was 20 foot long.

Mr Campsite Owner caters for those units which are popular and has no need to cater or advertise for specialised units such as FCs etc.

About half the units we have had in 40 years of camping have come under the "specialised" terminology and now that we are back to owning a bog standard caravan, it is quite refreshing not having to explain our needs or requirements every time we phone up to book a pitch.

So if you own anything other than a mobile tin box, be prepared for lengthy explanations as to your requirements!

Weve just got back into camping after a break of about 12 years, but many many years ago we had a Nimrod TT and I recal there was a symbol for trailer tents so you knew which sites were suitable or accepted them, I can't find that symbol on any of the campsites I've browsed recently, what's happened to it?

Trailer Tents and Folding campers have been around now for long enough that campsite owners must be aware of their existence, and if I have imagined that elusive symbol isn't it high time that camping organisations the world over got their heads together and sorted one out.

Have to say, I've never had this problem on any continental campsite ... is it just a UK thing?

I did think it would be easier when I moved from a trailer tent to a tin tent,

but since mine is over 7M long some sites don't like it and others want to put me in a hedge!!!!!!

We did sometimes struggle with site owners when we had a FC.

On one occasion a C&CC warden gave us very specific instructions on where to pitch, including which way to face. He would not listen to my efforts to explain how the unit opened. Needless to say when it opened we had to move it around 90 degrees to where I had originally said it should go. No apology; my fault apparently, for having a strange unit...

No trouble with either out TT or FC abroad.

Must admit... I never thought that this would be a problem, as TTs have been around for so long. But Im struggling to find anywhere on the Kent coast or up near my wife's family on Tyneside, that take TTs...silly isn't it ??

Where abouts on the Kent coast? We live in Kent and are taking our FC 1 mile up the road in a few weeks to test it at this place:

In 3 years of using our Pathfinder FC we only ever saw one other FC being used on a site.
That was a smaller Pennine in Northern Ireland.

Speaking to the couple that had it, they had never seen another one. Ours was their first sighting.

TTs are much more numerous on the ground, however with more and more campers using larger tents, once erected it can be difficult to know whether you are looking at a large tent or a TT.
However a FC is an FC and it stands out, a fact the becomes very apparent by the interest shown by tin tent owners when they see one arriving and being erected.

I would be most surprised if I saw more than a handful of sites openly advertising that they catered for FCs.
Most will have no knowledge of them far less having ever seen one.

We had no problem with our fc,used it in Northumberland numerous times,so don't think Tyneside will be a problem. Can't say it caused much of a stir when we used it. At Procters Stead near Craster last weekend and there were three in a row. We had a pennine fiesta, excellent bit of kit. Camping and caravaning magazine have plenty of sites and advice.

C&cc have accepted tts and focus for year. Only once have we encountered a manager anywhere near like th e one Trekkin Tekkie mentions, we showed him where the door was and he realised.

Stayed in Kent at c&cc Canterbury, Folkestone and Oldbury Hill, also a commercial site near Maidstone, which was called Pine Lodge, I think. All good with fcs.

Update to my reply above:

We've just re-joined the Camping and Caravaning Club and I had remembered correctly, they do use a specific symbol for trailer tents, these are used on the C&CC website and in their Big Sites Book.

I've never had a problem so far when booking with my folding camper. Recently had a week at Waren mill in Northumberland where we saw no less than 6 other FC's come and go during our stay - must be some kind of record.

However I've just booked up to go to Brighouse Bay in Dumfries and Galloway in the summer and I've just had the confirmation through the post which says tent with hook up. I guess i will have to ring them to confirm our unit is a FC.
