What do you think they did in the days of outside toilets and chamber pots? Peed in the pot then emptied it out in the morning. There's no mystery to it.
if your thinking of using a bucket instead of a toilet then i would just use something like zofora (dont know if its spelt that way) but hopefully you know what i mean rather than spend money on proper toilet chemicals.
I have a bucket with a lid and it's a godsend, especially in the middle of the night! when I empty and rinse it in the morning I spray it with dettol and let it dry. The only difference with using the chemicals is that they break down the contents. Not necessary if you only use it for "No.1's".
No need for chemicals at all for over night use - tends to be just for wee at that time, use the site facilities for the other!. Just empty the bucket each morning and then there's no nasty chemicals adding to the already poluted systems.
Hi Helen. I'd like to apologise for redtut's rudeness, for which there was no call.
I use Zoflora concentrated disinfectant in my bucket when I'm tenting, a little splash is all you need and it's a small bottle so takes up hardly any room when packing. Can get in in Wilkinson's and most supermarkets. Bucket is for emergency nighttime/early morning No1s only and I empty it & rinse it each day.
I use the proper toilet chemicals in the cassette loo in my caravan as it does often get used for No 2s when the site has limited facilities and I only empty it when it's full or we pack up to leave, whichever comes first.
Hope this explains the difference.

I should think as many times as people need to know others opinions!
Sometimes it is not easy to find the answers by using the search facility & a little patience for newbies is not too much too ask.
No one has to answer if they don't want to.
We started out with a good old fashioned bucket for night time use, used the blue loo chenical stuff in it (could be chav innit) sorry that is very silly.
Anyway one night our 4 year old forget where she was, sat on the bucket, sank into the bucket and almost tipped it over
We bought a small porta-loo just for the stability, it has a square bottom and is obviously very stable.
I think it would be quite difficult for little ones to sit on a bucket.
We used to have a proper porta-potti when ours were small as we used it in the caravan as well. It finally bit the dust last year when my son emptied it and lost the lid down the CD point. It was so old that Thetford couldn't supply a replacement lid. As we now have a proper cassette one in the caravan and the kids are teenagers I decided we'd make do with a BWL when tenting.
