My 1998 Crusader side walls are made of 18mm plywood with 3mm vinyl coated inner wallboards and 0.6mm stucco aluminium on the outside. I bought it second hand and had to replace the plywood and inner boards on both walls as they were rotton with damp. Are newer ones made the same way?
I have attached some pictures.

I had loads of offcuts of 18 mm marine ply left over from a boat job, thought it might come in handy. After 2 years of storage I decided to have a good clear out of my workshop, so the ply got dumped. 2 months after, I bought a Fiesta, and it needed a new door.Could I heck as like get a small bit of 18 mm exterior ply,I would had to buy a sheet of 8X4.A mate came my rescue with an off cut.sods law. Last years Pennines were still made out of 18 mm marine or exterior ply.I don't think they will change their construction design for anything else, as there is nothing better on the market as yet.I hope they don't go into this new plastic sandwich stuff some caravan manufactureres have tried out, if they do, bang goes DIY repairs.

I think the main problem with my camper walls was poor seals around the bottom of the walls, vents, electric and water connectors and under the wheel arches. Previous owners keeping only the transit cover on during winter storage periods. Perhaps newer models have better seals? I was lucky the floor only had minor problems.
I am in the process of repairing my camper, its a 96 cruiser, judging from your pics it is the same area that is damaged, however mine is only the rear half so have not had to do behind the kitchen unit. I was expecting to find the same plywood construction as yours but when i stripped it off it is a timber framework, with polystyrene sandwiched between 3mm ply, having seen yours i suppose i would have had to replace the whole side if it had been the solid 18mm ply even though only the rear half was affected.
I also suspect poor seals along the bottom edge to be the cause as there were no other visible means of water getting in.
Just waiting for some slightly warmer weather to get mine finished.

Great repair job, I am facing a similar issue with my pathfinder, can you advise me where you managed to find the marine plywood long enough for the side wall?

How long do you need? Travis Perkins do 2.44m lengths. Look here

We’ve got a pennine pathfinder that needs a bit of love and attention either side of the door. I can see that the seal has gone underneath that is obviously where water gets in . I can’t view your photos and would like to see them to give me an idea where to start replacing the side panel.
I just really need a little guidance where to start in removing the side panel
If you can email them I would be eternally grateful

Hello Shaun,
I am in Benidorm at present until 14th April. I had photos using photo bucket but they charge now. I will look for the photos when I get home and email them. Mine was a big job but the camper was in good condition when finished and gave us good holidays
All the best.
Fred
I had to replace all the wood and inner facing in the walls and door. I saved the outer wall metal by scraping the rotten wood off and sanded it. I used external grade plywood and cut it to shape.
I think I removed the door, unfastened the roof metal from the walls. Then removed all cupboards and everything inside. Then unscrewed walls from underneath and front and back. I covered the floor with 6mm ply as there was a bit of rot in places.
Hope yours is easier.
Fred.
