We have just sold our MH (to be replaced very shortly), and I`ve never thought the costs to be particularly high. Tax and insurance were about £500 last year, including European breakdown cover, and maintenance was probably no more than a couple of hundred pounds a year. The Ducato 2.8 engine averaged about 30 mpg on trips to France which is better than you would get towing.

If you don`t mind LHD, when you start shopping around, look into importing from Germany - - you will get a lot more for your money, and many dealers there are quite used to dealing with UK customers.

the running costs are similar to that of a car service mot tax and insurance plus the hab service you would pay for your caravan only difference would be if you traded in the car as well

Perhaps not a typical example but we got our current van new in March - the deal included 3 years free Fiat and Habitation servicing, radio and a decent Thatcham alarm system as standard. (Also bargained in a solar panel and reversing camera as we sold old van privately and didn't need to argue about part-ex price etc.)
Understand that Fiat and Habitation service costs would have been about £450 p.a. So a really good deal for us.(We prefer to ignore the depreciation for the time being!)

Guess if comparing with an older van (e.g. not in warranty) it would be sensible to shop around for best servicing deals.

So our initial running costs are insurance (£275 p.a.) and fuel, we are getting 29/30 mpg on most trips and will be doing up to 8K miles pa. (Van is taxed free/disabled.)

Friends with a new caravan seem to paying more than us for insurance btw.

Note: We just love the motorhoming life - but it ain't cheap like some non-campers assume. As others have said you should really try to use all the year round to justify the initial outlay... easy to do if retired btw.

Iggy

Our costs(for our previous 2.5,150hp Renault based Chausson)were approx.

VED-£165 (as over 3500kg)..

Insurance-approx. £300-350...

Base vehicle service/maintenance- Ranged from £250+ (simple(ish) service), to £850+ (when including the likes of a cam belt change and/or brake discs etc etc).

Habitation service/damp check- Approx only £100 as we ended up having a mobile "engineer" do ours.

MPG- Hovered around the mid-high 20s (..although would easily drop well into the mid-low teens when pressing on )

So as others have said, not too bad and the service side is maybe not too dissimilar to medium-large family car (but a MH is usually  "as well as", not "instead of").

Of cause, the more it's used, the less it seems to cost..

Just to add, if looking at an A class, check out the costs and as importantly, the availability of the windscreens and check how much 'screen cover you'd get when looking at insurance...

It depends whether you have a second car at the moment. If you do the only extra costs, compared to having a caravan, would be the cab service. We found that habitation service, insurance were about the same as a caravan and road tax and fuel less.

Not far short of that actually! We've got an A-Class and have had the misfortune of having to have the windscreen replaced twice in 15 months! Last year we had a chip on it which was in the windscreen wiper area on the driver's side. The assessor said that it couldn't be repaired, so a new one was fitted, cost £2600, but £75 to us, excess on policy. Then this holiday we had a stone hit it on the passenger side which caused a crack all the way from bottom to top. Result: another new windscreen. We were lucky as the insurance will only pay out once in a period of 12 months for a windscreen replacement.

Check the limit of cover on a windscreen on A Class, ours is £3000, which is sufficient, but Autoglass told us that on larger MHs, such as Carthago and the bigger Hymers, the cost is about £5000.
