Hi All

we have just joined motorhome stopovers - its a web based club which has recruited a range of venues (mostly pubs) who are willing to let motorhomes overnight on their land/carparks.

the cost is 30 a year but stopovers are free (it is expected that you frequent the venue whilst there) - its seems like a jolly good idea to me as it will be a little more secure than wildcamping

we haven't actually stayed anywhere yet but have booked to stop at two places in the next week but my initial communications with the venues have been very good

i will keep you informed but thought other may be interested

moseley 38, this scheme is just a money making endeavour. There are loads of pubs you can stay on without paying anything as well as pubs that have registered campsites.

You can also access pubs that agree stopovers in one of the camping magazines, here is a link:

Pubstop scheme

Before you pay anything next year just have a look at the other posts about this on this site.

Here is a list of campsites with pubs as well:

pubs with campsites

Also £30 per year is as much almost as the CC and CCC fees and they actually give you something for your money.

Must admit that £30 a year seemed steep for someone making a list of pub stopovers.  Number of stopover sites is very limited and, until you've paid your money, you don't know what exact area they are in so equally don't know whether they'll be of any use of if you're wasting your money.

Well sorry I spoke!

personally I feel that its not too much - the money goes to the upkeep of the site printing of booklets and promotion.

we are members of cc but with them you still have to pay to use their sites and apart from that privelage you don't get anything else!

I do relize there are lists elsewhere but these are limited and they also charge a site fee

No need to apologize for giving info that will be of use to others if not all. After all if it  saves you £30 in pitch fees in a year its well worth it. Let us know how you get on

There are plenty of small clubs who could really benefit form getting £30 a year let alone give the money to a company.

Where did they get their information from, one wonders? Surely they wouldn't have got it from the likes of Uk Campsites, SBMCC, Motorhome Facts, Wild Camping  et al? That would be very naughty wouldn't it?

If you read some of the other forums you'll see that the general opinion of the site  is "Nice try but don't hold your breathe because we're not all as green as we are acbbage looking"

the other opinion is unless people bother to give it a try then how is it ever going to work!

i am sure similar comments were made about cc and ccc whenthey first started

there are also other website - such as motorhome facts (which i used to be a member) who charge just for the priveledge of being a forum member! so whats the difference.

i spoke to the guy running the site and yes he has got a way to go yet - there are many bits of the site not opperating how they should but to get it right it takes time AND MONEY - he is trying to acheive something we have been asking for for a long time, so if it costs me the paltry sum of £30 which is less than the cost of half a tank of deisel (approx 250 miles travel) to support someones good idea - I think its worth it!

i am only sorry there are so many short sighted people on this sight who knock others for sharing what may prove to be useful info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although something I haven't tried personally, if you fancy stopping at a pub somewhere why not just ask if it's ok to park overnight on the basis that you will have a drink or meal in the pub. If not move on to another pub I'm sure you'd soon find one who would let you. Maybe you could ask if you could list the pub for others to use. This would benefit the pub & us motorhomers. It would certainly be cheaper than some of the site fees I've looked at.

I think that there are probably a lot of places that would allow you to stay but if you are travelling and its late its good to know there are places who have given their agreement before you just turn up

i know you can easily move on to the next place but from experience this can take all night!

Hi

I`m a member of motorehome stopovers and I think its a great idea,I also think 30 quid is bugger-all nowdays. The number of sites is growing and it certainly gives you an alternative to the mainstay sites , cl`s and cs`s.

Please Mosely don't be sorry for giving information about this scheme. It is always useful to know about new things but equally it is also useful for others to give their views and feedback on any scheme particularly if there is a cost involved.

We used to have a pub and occasionally people came in for a meal and asked if they could stay the night in the car park, we always agreed as long as they used the pub. We also had boats mooring up free as long as they ate inside.

People have pointed out that all the information offered by this scheme is available for free elsewhere but if someone wants to join and pay then that is up to them.

Personally I would not join this as I think it is creating a situation where pubs and the like start to charge for what up to now has been free if you just ask.

I beg to differ here, as one thing you can get via the CC is cheaper ferry fares. We have had some really good deals through them, and have certainly saved our £30+ membership fees that way.

As for the scheme you mention, it would be very good if you found yourself stuck for somewhere to stay overnight and there was something conveniently nearby. Personally such a scheme would not interest me, as we always book somewhere, but I have no doubt that there will be many others for whom it would be useful. Although having said that, as others have mentioned, a lot of pubs would allow you to stay overnight anyway, providing you bought a meal in the pub. But I get your point of being able to go to a particular pub, if it was one in that scheme, rather than having to try and possibly be turned away.

The Caravan and Caravan and Camping Club also have a huge network of small certificated campsites, often attached to pubs or farms and you can search via the 'Big Sites Book' or the 'CC book' or even on line where you can 'google earth' the site to have a good look at the area.

How on earth can you get stuck somewhere with all the CLs around, all you need is the books and a mobile phone.

I also got a free night from my user card and the Temporary holiday sites are brilliant, just so friendly and very cheap.

Oh and not forgetting the rallies most weekends.
