Hi, as a complete novice to camper van llife, my partner Sue and I would be grateful for any advice. The first question is do we buy a 12 tv or use one from home ?

You must be very rich
I just use a normal TV/DVD combo from Aldi - 240V on mains or 12V if no hook-up. You need to check that the transformer is in the power lead though, as some are built into the TV and you can't run it off your battery.
Agree with the above - ours cost £80 from Asda. Just check to see if it has a mains transformer in the plug/lead. Gives more versatility once you've bought a 12V lead for it and SO much cheaper than a 'camping-specific' model!
Kogan have a 22" with DVP and PVR that runs of both 12V and 240V for about £129 - lovely TV with very low power consumption which is important when on 12V. When I last monitored mine it was pulling about 21W on average. Some of the other cheap TVs consume a lot more for a comparable size screen.

We have a cheap one from Comet (Kenmark I think) I run it using a Amperor voltage stabilizer as some of the cheap TV's might not be able to cope with the variation in voltage from the 12 volt battery which can be over 14 volts output at times.
We bought a specific 12v TV - we did a lot of research and as a leisure battery can vary in its voltage which can ruin your TV. We bought a CELLO tv - really impressed with it and have it fixed via a flip down bracket in out vdub.

We keep hearing that, but has anyone actually had it happen? I'm on my third one with no problems. I've still got one 15" and a 22" - the other 15" wasn't impressed with being dropped about 6 feet onto my concrete drive

You should get one from Tesco John - mine was kicked off the table by an idiot teenager playing football and slamming into the front of my awning, and it also fell four and a half feet onto gravel hardstanding a couple of years ago, survived without a scratch and still works perfectly.

Sadly TM, it would probably have been alright on gravel, but it landed on the top right-hand corner and the impact was just too hard for the case, which lost a big chunk of plastic. Much to my surprise, it still worked but it was just a TV, so it was a good excuse to replace it with a TV/DVD
yeah I do the same as you Francophile1947...buy a cheap 240 tv/dvd from tesco or similiar and remove the externel tranformer and add a normal 12v plug available from maplins or similar for a couple of pounds....last one was still going strong when I sold the van after 2and a half years..one in the present van was fitted last xmas ....kids watch it all the time when in the back...
