We're going away with our VW T25 multivan in a couple of weeks time and wondered about attaching our camping tarp to the gutter rail of the van to give us a bit of extra room and shade.
I've not tried it, so don't know if the tarp will work or not. But wondered what was the best way to attach it to the van.
Ours is a low roof van and the tarp doesn't have the awning bead, it's a bit like a ground sheet. I saw the clamps on ebay and JustKampers and wondered if they would hold it in place. Thanks
For a low roof van, then as Wendyhouse suggested, you could just use Clingons and some guys/straps(tie something like tea towels around the Clingons though,as ours would clack the roof of the van(which irritated the hell out of me!).
Although those fussy about their paintwork, also use pipe lagging type sleeves on the guys...
Hasn't the tarp already got eyelets?..if not, as long as the material is up to it, you could just knock a few in.. ?
I have a car awning, much the same as your idea and it comes with fairly hefty suction cups with hooks attached (the type where you fold the hook down to create the suction) maybe you could try something like that.
It's got eyelets and guyropes and yes OH is worried about the paintwork. I was hoping to attach the tarp to the gutter. We're going to the Campervan show at the Museum of power at Langford, Essex on Sunday so might get some ideas there.
Oh?...I meant Clingons, fixed to the tarp, so as fasten the guys to(if strapping over the roof)..
If I was using a pole I'd probably see if I could wrap the tarp around it a couple of times(..or sew/tape in a "pole sleeve"?)..and then just clamp it to the gutter....
(although of the two, having never used those clamps and therefore being unsure of how secure they are(not without marking the paint!), I'd probably just guy over the top...there's less to flail about and cause damage if something does let go..)
Oops!..sorry 'giggles I was responding to minicamper...
If your tarp has eyelets then I'd just try guying to them to start with...
Iv thought of doing this.By us is a place called 'sea flo' and they sell long thin heavy duty magnets.I was thinking of sewing them into some kind of sleeve.
Magnets may be okay for attaching something that doesn't require much tension(eg .the apron of a drive-away awning etc) but I doubt very much, that ordinary/un-powered magnets would be up to taking the "welly" needed to keep a tarp tensioned..
After a little playing around with different clamps and searching google, we went for the pole & clamp method. Raided the shed for 3 poles and stitched a channel down one length of the ground sheet. We got 4 clamps from the local caravan shop for £5, borrowed the guy ropes off another tent and we have an "awning" for the van. It did what we wanted it to, which was to help keep the van shaded and meant we could cook in the rain under the shelter.
