I've got myself a Tom Tom & used for 1st time travelling from Rhyl to Liverpool Empire Theatre to see Tommy Steele in Dr Doolitle (the wife's all time Favourite).

We got there easily & found convenient parking quickly. My wife had to admit when we got home she found it reassuring & thinks it will help stop us arguing.

My son has had the 910 model for a couple of years but doesn't use all the functions.

www.tomtom.com/productadvisorTom Tom product advisor helped me overcome the problem of a vast range to choose from. I'm not too hot on IT but this was a good aid to find what satisfied my needs as well as being easy to use i was able to compare my chosen product 'XL Europe' against the 920T, GO 720 & the GO720T. I was also able to print off the specification to show the sales person exactly what i wanted without dithering.

Halfords price was competitive at the time & they give you a demo - (but its so easy to use i think even i could have set it up) but its nice to know you could allways pop back if you had any difficulty. Staff were helpful & efficient.

I'm chuffed with my purchase & would recomend anyone to consider a sat nav particular when towing. I hope to improve my driving by negotiating rounabouts 1st time instead of regularly having to go go around x2 & some times x3 wben in a non familiar area. The speed camera alerts are very handy, didn't realise there were so many on the Rhyl to Liverpool Route, (Might save me a few bob in fines).

Happy Caravaning , Rob & Chris from sunny Rhyl

They are brilliant, but if you are towing, check the map as well as they sometimes take you on very unsuitable roads.

I bought a SatNav after using my mates all the time and its a more updated version of her TomTom One - I find the speed camera alerts great and also I have it programmed so a sound is made everytime I go over the speed limit.  It might drive me daft sometimes but better that than having to pay out for fines and having my licence endorsed.

We have used one for a couple of years now, OH finds it reassuring but I still check with one of the on-line routeplanners and a map before towing. You dont want to end up stuck, as has happened to numerous people who had complete blind faith in them, not knowing or realising that it doesnt care if you are towing a big box!!

All the advice about checking the route before you set off and making sure it takes you the way you want to go is good advice, and once you have done this it gives you plenty of advance notice of what you have to do. I never had a problem navigating but I find it relaxing to know that i will be kept informed about the progress I am making and about possible obstructions along the way.

stupid queswtion but I presume a satnav needs updating as road systems change. How do you do this and does it cost money?

Don't rely on your sat nav when you get near your destination , although they are good for major roads , when it comes to the smaller roads they don't allow for the fact your towing .

I was towing along a A road recently and i had the sat nav set to fastest route , because there were some 40mph limits on the A road " it " ( the sat nav ) tried to send me down every B road we came to because they were national speed limits .
I changed the setting in the TT to the shortest route and this gave basically the same results .

So make sure you know what sort of roads your going to be travelling on , and use your common sense , if the road your starting to turn into looks like a country road and your not very close to your destination think twice before driving down it .

agree with wizard on this one we went to dale acres CC site in kent this year my sat nav tried to route us down a 6' 6" width road shame our vans 7' wide ,so use it with a very large pinch of common sense and do a route planner first also check with campsite about the roads approaching them

michael, thanks for your note regarding updating a satnav and the cost (???)and freferring me to theTomTom website.

I now know why you put the question marks in your reply. I searched the web site and found plenty about opeing an account with TomTom but nothing about how much it woill cost me to update the maps.

Has anyone done this and can anyone give me an idea of the cost? £1.00 or £10.00 or £100.00. The salesman in Halfords whilst offering me a demo and praised the virtues of a satnav totally avioded my question on uprade costs. I think I am too suspicious for my own good at times.

Don't forget to keep an eye out for width and height restrictions with any sat nav if you are towing as they are notorious for sending you down unsuitable roads. Don't be afraid to ignore it occasionally if you get suspicious.

Hi.

I have had a tomtom for 18 months. Once you have registered on their site upgrades are all free. I would however reccomend subscribing to traffic notifications. Cheap at £30 for the year if you do plenty of miles.

Martin.

I have recently bought a Panasonic CN-GP50N satnav.  It has a 5 inch screen and is a really useful piece of equipment.

I love the subject line of this thread. "Satnav Aquired" suggests it was aquired by less than honest means. How exactly did you aquire it?

I assume you bought it in the sales or got it for Christmas, just found the vagueness of "aquired" amusing.

Someone "aquired" my Garmin after they broke my window
