just had a nice detachable tow bar fitted to my new Skoda Octavia 4x4. Lovely job, can't see anything when the swan neck ball is detached and the 13 pin socket folded away.
However, where do I fit the breakaway cable. The bar is fitted so neatly that there is none of the base tow bar in view. It's not a great idea to wrap it around the detachable ball as it might....detach!
Good attachment Viggo, we only found out when we bought our new van that we were doing it incorrectly. I was clipping the standard breakaway cable direct to a mounting point as the hole is too small to pass the clip through. Now I know we have to just wrap it round the towball.

Depends on the clip - some are stronger and designed to clip straight to the mounting point. And you can always pass the clip through the mounting point, but you have to open the clip to make it fit!

The mounting point on my towball is only about 1cm in diameter so probably not meant for the breakaway cable anyway!! Best stick to wrapping it back on itself round the towbar.
Certainly illegal in Holland to wrap it around towball & possibly in other European countries. If hole or loop on towbar is too small to put clip thru, leave a suitable sized shackle in hole to thread clip thru. Talking to a Dutch caravanner tho, he said the cops are happy to see any sort of clip just clipped thru hole but will fine you if its around tow ball.
I just clip mine to the towbar. The wire will break before the clip. If in doubt, get a stronger clip. Looping the wire through a square edged hole might well chafe through the wire. Much better with a proper clip. Get one at least double the breaking strain of the wire.
I don't like them wrapped round the ball in case the ball itself detaches. Unlikely though.

There are two holes either side of my detachable towbar, I put a shackle through the hole and feed/loop my breakaway cable through the shackle.
What size shackle do you use & where did you get it from? That sounds like a good idea.

Tentz, do you have a link to this "rule" as I can't find one?
Scroll down page on this Dutchlink To diagram marked 'De breekkabel'(breakaway cable) relevant usual very poor Google translation from Dutch is....
Attach the cable not only to the ball (if the ball breaks the cable tightening no point). Attach him not only in the slalom clip (here he fails while driving often). But how? Often there is one eye on the ball welded into it. Or the tow through the slalom at the bottom clamp and tighten.
Or just Google 'breakaway cable law Holland' you will find stuff about it.
A suitable sized shackle can be bought from a boat shop.
We've just changed to a Skoda Octavia Estate (not 4x4) and have had a Witter detachable towbar fitted. I queried the breakaway cable today and was told to either change our breakaway cable to the sort that has a karabiner on the end and connect it directly to the fixing point (which has a small hole) or put a karabiner throught the fixing point and then loop the breakaway cable through the karabiner and then back on itself. I asked if looping around the detachable towbar was acceptable and I was told that it's not OK if you have an official fixing point as you should use that. Our existing breakaway cable has a strange metal clip a bit like a weak karabiner but without the spring part.
We've bought an anodised sprung karabiner from Blacks to use for our next trip but will look out for a locking karabiner with a screw gate. There's a wikipedia article with the differences: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carabiner
Our towbar part number is ZD-3002 and we've been back three times for them to programme the car to switch off the rear parking sensors when the caravan is connected and finally today they've managed it!
