hi we have the V6 petrol auto santa f'e and it is great we love it,only down side is the LPG its only 17 MPG when towing.pulls without a problem.ours is a 2004 and spoiled by cleaning nearly every day.ours is at an end now but the 5 year warranty was first class.very comfortable.tell him before he buys to check the cam belt has been changed as per book/mileage as it is an expensive job.

Have a look at some of the previous posts re santa fe as there have been a few.
I have a 2010 2.2l (diesel) automatic 7 seat and it has been great. I tow 1200kgs and get 30mpg in town and 38 on motorway solo and this is reduced to 24 to 27mpg when towing (usually with 4 bikes on roof as well)
Lovely car to drive, just had first service after 12 months and 17000 miles and no issues. My mate has the same car and has a van 1500kgs and he thinks the same.
I would definitely recommend the car.

I've got an '05 diesel auto which I've had for about 2 years now.
I tow 1500kg and the 115bhp is just about enough - economy is about 24mpg when towing which is reasonable for the weights involved.
Not had any major problems (worst was a cracked ABS disk which cost £70 to get fixed).
However, wouldn't recommend the V6. It will handle the towing fine but economy will be horrible and with the price of petrol, 5mpg can make a big difference. Also, unless it's a second car, they'll be using it solo more often than towing and they'll be lucky to get 30mpg if they're gentle (15mpg towing?).

Hi, I have a diesel Santa Fe, careful driving on the motorway gets me around 42-45 MPG, towing 34. Mine is an 08 and it's a big car, but a dream to drive.

Google 'Hyundai Santa Fe Recalls'
2010/11 problem:-
Platform and part sharing is a good thing – it saves money for both the automaker and the consumer and allows engineers more time to develop and refine the individual assemblies that go into making an automobile. The unfortunate flipside, in the unlikely event of an incorrectly designed or manufactured part, is that more than one model tends to be affected.
Such is the case with the 2011 Hyundai Sante Fe, which shares the majority of its most important unseen bits and pieces with the 2011 Kia Sorento. As you may recall (*ahem*), certain 2011 Sorento models were fitted with rear brake calipers that were improperly machined. Same part, same problem, same explanation:
"As a result, brake fluid will leak, followed by illumination of the malfunction indicator light indicating the brake fluid level is low and should be checked, then a soft or spongy brake pedal feel, and if not serviced, reduced braking power which could increase the risk of a crash."
See the complete recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after the break.

I believe this recall was for the US models (built in the US)
If you read the forums faults include the cruise control as already mentioned. Mine is fine and some owners have cured the problem adjusting the switch on the clutch pedal. Not sure about Autos.
Initially some owners were complaining of a smelly clutch when reversing. Mine did this when very new but soon stopped, may have been bedding in. Mine developed a clonk when pulling off and changing gear. this turned out to be hub nuts working loose. There is a fix for this, the dealer did this while I waited.
Suspension drop links can go at 60k miles. This was on the pre-facelift models so only time will tell if it affects 2010 on cars. I think these are excluded from the 5 year warranty and are only covered for 3 years / 60K.
Can't think of anything else. Love mine :-)

I have recently bought a new Santa Fe in March the 5 seater Premium model lovely car to dfrive avg 38/39 towed 1400kg caravan to France 25/27mpg avg speed was 60/70mph!!! towed like a dream hence the speed you must keep a watch on the speedo lol. One fault since new that appears to be a problem that HYundai are struggling to overcome as it has been known about since March 2010 is the unreliability of the cruise control it works then its diesnt really frustrating been back 4 times to rectfy but the problem continues apparently a soft ware fault. Other than that a smart looking lovely 4x4 to drive.
I had this problem on my Tucson. There is a software fault so that if you are on a long drive and have been using cruise control and then pull off the road and switch off, when you come to start again the cruise control will sometimes not work. The solution is then to slow down below 30mph and the cruise control will reset and work properly thereafter. I believe the same fault exists on the Santa Fe. Hyundai never did cure it.

Hi
sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Some of you may recall my ****** santa fe.
New model 18months old. Taken to france for 3 weeks last summer. car and trailer tent eventually returned - thabks to excellect swift cover.
HYUNDAI UK were in dispute with hyundai france about replacing the auto gear box that failed on day 3 of holiday. We spent next 2 weeks back and to loads phone calls ect . 2 days before due to come home uk agreed tofrench doing replacement job under 5 year warranty. the french garage had the parts 3 days after car arrived with them. The uk agrued that they wanted it done in uk?
we have to hire cars, come home on ferry as foot passangers ect ect****************.
Finally we were reunited with our crap car and trailer tent. Only to be told it would take another 2 weeks for gear box as they were waiting for one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to day the santa fe went and also my i30. Very dissapointed in hyundai and thier service.
Having been customers for 15c years with variours models - never again.
Please beware espicially if you have a problem abroad- that goodness for swift cover.

I have just posted my 2005 (55) plate SF petrol. Had for over a year with no problems whatsoever. Only done 60K and am asking 4.5K which is a bargain.
If he is bying second hand, I believe the cambelt change is 50K miles and this can be expensive. I got mine done at the Hyundai dealers when I bought it, so check this has been done. Also, check FSH.
Other than that, I have loved mine, but am selling caravan so getting another Jag as I miss my last one.
If he is interested he can email on mjdawes65 at googlemail.com

I also get a slight clonk, which maybe as you describe - never got to the bottom of it, despite mentioning at the first service. It appears to happen when the gear is reengaged after depressing of the clutch - but not if you just press the clutch in and out.
Interested in more details of your soloution
