I am looking for breakdown cover for our car and caravan and finding it hard to find one that will cover our van as its 26.5ft without either joining a club or breaking the bank. We are looking for full cover ie homestart, continue journey ect....but not to worried about europe cover. What companies do you all use?
Most car based recovery services will not cover the caravan in all incidents. Ie when not hitched to the car ect ect so you would be better off to join one of the clubs & take out their specific caravan based recovery.CC use green flag & C&CC use the RAC,but the cover you get is superior (& usually cheaper)to the cover normally received from the same companies
No size or weight restrictions, we cover any combination of car, caravan and motorhome.
Dual recovery - If you break down on your way to a site and your vehicle can't be fixed we'll take you to your holiday destination and back home again (Roadside and Recovery, Premium UK).
No extra charge for specialist equipment if your outfit gets stuck on soft ground.
24 hour cover, 365 days a year - with or without your caravan, tent or motorhome.
If your caravan cannot be towed, we'll still recover it (Roadside and Recovery, Premium UK).
Cover for any driver in your vehicle.
No patrols just the right response vehicle every time - A nationwide network means we send the right vehicle for your needs not just the nearest one.
Rapid Response Pledge - if one of our specialist technicians does not reach you within an hour, you can claim £10.
Option to purchase extras - including personal cover and additional vehicle cover.
under 23 ft is it in the small print? need to read mine.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

ring green flag as they cover our caravan.
They cover your car, if the caravan breaks down they will not recover it. You need mayday for green flag to recover a broken down caravan.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
I have taken a cover out recently after doing much research, and like you I didn't want the European cover either. The best value was RAC 'Arrival' via the C&CC and if you give them the code on the adverts placed on here you can get free membership with the Camping and Caravanning Club when you join. What made my final decision was the fact that if your caravan is pitched on a site and you go out for the day with your car and you break down they will recover you within a 75 mile radius and also recover your caravan as well.
thats a good point tango with the breakdown occuring when your out....
just checked my Green Flag cover, and it is quite specific in that it will only recover "when being towed by the insured vehicle". might reconsider this at renewal.
Bill - you have to take the additional caravan and trailer cover, else you are right the standard green flag policy will not cover caravan breakdown. i have added this on for only a few quid a year and T&Cs are very clear that it will cover in exactly the same way as the car...so if the car is fine they will recover caravan.
i learnt the hard way when i had to arrange recovery after a numpty smashed the van, but missed the car!

I have just checked out the ost of that and it is an eye watering £230 but in the first year it does pay The £40 CCC fees. Join the CC for £42 and the same cover is £89 so unless I have missed something I do not see how the Arrival scheme is best value.

had a blow out on caravan two weeks ago coming back from whitby right on the moors, managed to jack caravan up on caravan legs got spare off but couldnt undo the wheel bolts, so called out rac for "roadside assistance" only to be told that they do not cover the caravan, been a member for years and did not know that, was rather annoyed with the operator, but they did send a patrol and gave us priority because of the road i was on.I was going to cancel my account with them at the time, but now i have calmed down i think i will stay with them as i cant see anything better, the patrol told me that if we hadn't have got priority we would have been there for about three hours as he had four breakdowns before us.
------------- you are only as old as the woman you feel.
I am glad I read this post as it made me look at the small print of our breakdown service and I have found our caravan is too long for our policy but the trailer is covered so we are ok when camping. I have used Autoaid for years and on the few occasions I have suffered a breakdown I have been pleased with the service. You pay for the call out at the time and claim it back from Autoaid. I have paid by credit card and received the cheque in the post before the credit card bill arrived so it has worked well for me. At only £38 per year for cover for me and my spouse in any vehicle it is as cheap as chips. However, now I need to do something to get the caravan covered. Is there such a thing as a policy just to cover breakdown of a caravan? I am going to ring Autoaid next week to see if there is anything they can do or if there is another policy they can offer me.
