Hello,

I currently have a small 12 foot caravan but my 1999 ford focus 1.6 struggles to tow it.  I am looking at getting a more powerful 2nd hand estate car and at some point will upgrade the caravan to a bigger one.  Although i would love a big 4x4 practically i could prob not afford to run it or buy tyres for it, so I would like to know what 10 yr old car gives a good kerbweight ?  I want the best towing car i can get without jumping up to the 4x4 market.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.  Thank Carl

My current caravan is 750kg but its small.  I am about to upgrade my car for a more powerful one and dont want to replace it twice cause i picked the wrong one when i upgrade to a bigger caravan.  No idea o weight of new caravan yet but would like a fairly big one that i can tow with a powerful estate car. Can only afford a car from about 1999-2000

Go for a mondeo. deisel preferably but petrol will do. Great tow car and very affordable for a decent one in your range.
Failing that a Volkswagon passat. Got a good one for sale as it happens.

If you are looking for a 10yr old car you want the best one you can find whatever the make. You are looking for service history & what parts have been replaced. This is more important the actual make. With a diesel car which is obviously best for towing, any major mechanical failure, be it clutch, turbo, injectors etc will probably cost you more than you paid for the car to get repaired at commercial rates. Most cars of this age are scrapped once a major repair is required.

Plenty of 8-10yr old diesel Mondeos & Vectras about for £700odd but you will need that again & more in the bank for any repairs. A Passat or Audi A4 of same age will cost £1-2k, repairs will cost even more & most will have mega mileage.

If you are lucky enough to find any of these cars or similar will low mileage & full main dealer service history then that will be the one to go for whatever the make.

Mondeo.. Cheaper to buy than a focus of the same year.

MK3 2007 for £2000 ish.. Diesels pull easily. I managed high 30's with a 1150kg caravan.

TDDI from 2000 - 2002 115bhp Less high tech fuel system.

TDCI 2001 - 2007 High tech fuel system but more power and economy.

I paid £2000 for my 2004 130bhp MK3 estate in 2009.
115bhp TDCI came later.

Plenty under £1000.

MK2 Mondeo but diesel only a 1.8 with 90bhp.

2L petrol cars but your looking at mid 20's MPG when towing and town traffic.

You could consider an estate car with the Haldex 4x4 on demand system.
Have a look for the Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 with the 1.9TDi PD diesel engine in. A small 4x4 without the cost of the big ones and ideal for the smaller caravan.

Agree with the above. I am currently selling my Passat TDi Estate:

Weighed around 1520kg when I stuck it on a weigh bridge. I think due to the high spec? Tows our 5 berth van (1325MPTLM) with ease.

You could consider a Saab 93 or 95. Plenty about good spec and well finished. The diesels are good.

There is no problem getting parts for them despite Saab ceasing production.(Although they are hoping to restart under their new owners!).

I have an 07 convertible (which could tow but does'nt). Its a lovely car. I can get 38-42 mpg and am not light footed!
You could also consider a Volvo estate .

I tow with a 1999 vw bora 2.0 petrol and my elddis wisp 350/2 weighs about the same as your caravan, didn't start towing untill the car was over 150k miles the only problem I have had is a break light switch has gone and was £6 to replace but due to the the age mileage condition et it is only doing mid 20s mpg if I'm lucky and dose not drop while towing nor does it feel like anything is on the back it's a true pleasure to tow with

I brought a 2006 Kia magentis crdi manual last year , one owner,27000 miles ,I know it's not an estate but it is a Big comfortable saloon with a large boot, I paid just over £3k for it and it has a towing limit of 1700kg and tows my coachman amara 380 with ease, I have done 10000 miles since I brought it and had no problems and only money spent on it was a pair of MAD springs , I get about 32/34 mpg towing

Nice example there mate!

Ive had one of these passat estates for the last 6 years and its been the best car ive ever had.

The maximum braked tow weight on them is 1600KG. My van is 1350KG MAM and i still get over 30mpg.

Mine had 120'000 mile on it when i got it and it covered that in the first 3 years of its life!!17

It was a gamble when i bought it but one which has paid off big time! As long as you have a full service history with these, dont worry about mileage- within reason.

The only thing mine has had is a radiator, just after i got, 200 quid pattern afair from ebay 17, a 12 quid temp sensor and a battery! Apart from the usual consumables like tyres, CV boots and brake pads, thats more or less it and its now covered 165'000 miles!

Its still on the origonal factory clutch AND exhaust system for christ sake!
Mondeo's are a great car but i think you'l struggle to match the build qaulity and longetivity of the B5 passat, its a shame the same cannot be said of the later version!

I would have another one of these tomorow if i could find one with reasonable milage,

fantastic car in every way.

Citroën C5 Estate (01-04)

Braked Towing Weight     1450 kg

£1000 - £1500 will get you a 2.0 HDi Diesel with under 60,00 miles on the clock. The saloon version is even cheaper.

My last one ran to 198,000 miles and engine was still sound
