Hello everyone

We have just bought a Toyota Avensis 2.0 turbo diesil, on a 56 plate, what i want to know is, will it pull our 1999 eldiss cyclone ex2000. We asked the dealer where we bought our car from, and he said that it would be fine for towing, but after reading other posts, I,m not so sure, and now I,m getting worried.

Thanks to all who take the time to reply.

Looks like the caravan's 1400kg but the cars max towing limit is only 1300kg.

You are 100kg over your max towing weight.

Thanks for your reply, Grampian91, my husband wants to keep the car, because we are going to put the caravan on a seasonal pitch for next year, or we could change the van, but we really dont want to do that because we,ve only had the van since April, and we really like this one (this is our third van in five years), so we,d like to hang on to this van, for as long we can, because it really suits us.

We are due to collect the car from the dealer tomorrow, then we,ve got to get a towbar fitted, we are not due to take the caravan out till August bankholiday weekend.

Thanks again.

I used to have an '04 plate Avensis, with the 115 bhp diesel engine, and a max towing of 1300Kg, as my Caravan had a MTPLM of 1290Kg, and was 93% of the car's kerbweight it wasn't ideal.   Biggest problem I had was that the engine was gutless below 2000 rpm and needed a fair bit of revs, which wasn't good for the clutch. Stability was OK though.

It depends on how heavy your caravan is, if you have the more powerful engine, etc. But then again if you're only going to be towing twice a year, you might get away with it, just take it steady.

56' plate would be the improved engine (120hp I think), not the older 116hp one. They were good engines but a bit gutless, whereas the newer ones have more torqe. If your just siting the van I'd say go for it, but keep it to 1300kg.

Hello Julie

Not sure if it helps but I have a 2009 Toyota Avensis Tourer TR 2.0 diesel, Kerb weight is 1,520 Kg, max towing weight 1,600kg  and is a great tow car.

We tow both our caravans no problem, the Bailey Ranger GT 520/4 has a  MTPLM 1,326kg, and the Bailey Pageant Burgundy is 1,400 kg. Fuel consumption 'towing' is 36 mpg on both caravans.

Needless to say the Toyota is 100% relaiable,BUT check your tyre pressures on the car for towing or fuel consumption will vary if not correct!

Mike
