Well I have just waved bye bye to my ’07 Passat 2.0 TDI SE Estate, as it’s gone back to the leasing company after its allotted 4 years with me.

In that time I can honestly say it has been the most reliable car it’s been my pleasure to own. There is a lot of bad press surrounding the reliability of Passats on the internet forums, particularly around the 2.0 TDI PD engine, what with faulty injectors, oil pumps and whatnot. But the thing to bear in mind is that for every bad car you read about on the internet there are plenty of other satisfied owners who don’t post about their good experiences. Hopefully I can redress the balance.

In the 4 years I’ve had it since new; I’ve done 122,000 miles and had to have the handbrake module replaced under warranty and a parking sensor. And that’s it. Nothing else, not even a light bulb.  It is as powerful and economical now as it was when new, and it felt as if it had plenty of miles left in it.

I would average around 44 Mpg in mixed driving, and about 26 mpg when towing. It would drink about a litre of expensive long life oil every 5,000 miles. Its drunk oil from new and uses no more now after all that mileage.

Now that I’ve been cast adrift by my employer into the nasty world of private car ownership, I’ve gone for the only safe option I know, I’ve bought myself a Passat!  A ’57 reg Passat Estate 2.0 TDI Sport  4motion.

Thats when it starts to go downhill. When paying your own repair costs.
Skoda superb come out better in reliability tests.

Any car can breakdown. Its all down to pot luck really.

The early new shape Passats 2005 had a few issues, with fuel pumps going enmass, but VW decided not to do a recall apparently and just wait for them to go worng ! As mine did one morning on the M1. I had loads of other issues, parking sensors, central locking etc and like yours it consumed oil almost as quick as diesel

But I agree, good economy & powerful, would I have another? Possibly but the wife hated the parking button and push key start !

I will think you will find its a better car with a prestige badge, if you want a Passate you can get one off the shelf, if you want the better roomier Superb you will have around a 6 month Wait

got rid of my 07 passat 2.0 pd before it all went expensively wrong , dmf was on its way out , yes i could have had it done and had the cambelt / water pump major service done as well but always the chance of the injectors or oil pump failing after that . i didnt like the car enough to spend on it , very solid nice car not bad on fuel and went well indeed but just couldnt take to it enough to warrant the expense.
