Well this weekend was the first chance for me to test out my new tent. I arrived on site in cornwall on thursday and it was windy, forecast said gusts up to 44mph but I don't think it was quite that bad. I had somebody to help me because of this and went along putting in poles and pegging out at the same time, no problem until we had done the third set of poles and 3 of them just buckled and two snapped completely. Coleman weathermaster I think not. I then had a choice of either driving 200 miles home or getting hold of another tent. I went for the latter option and bought a gelert stratus 4 from a local shop as this was all they had that would fit my stuff in. We pitched it no problem and as the weather got worse during the night with gales and torrential rain it stood up to it no problems. Unfortunately on saturday afternoon my gas fridge decided to end it all and take the tent with it, I had only been gone 10 minutes. Quick thinking on the part of my neighbour averted potential disaster with my gas bottles. At agility shows we have to have a fire bukcet of water outside our tents and mine doubles as dogs drinking water and this was used rapidly to put out the burning tent and he had turned the gas off and removedm it. I had one dog with me and two in the car which was next to the tent, if the gas had gone up who knows what might have happened? Even worse if it had happened during the night as I don't think we would have got out. I spent the night in the back of a van belonging to the people camped the other side and arrived home last night. I am going to go to coleman direct about the tent and see what they say but not surprisingly I have had enough of tents!!!!!
------------- never argue with an idiot........ they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience
the fridge was a combicool 3 way one and it was about 3/4 years old. It was nowhere near the fly sheet as I was always careful about that because of the pilot light. It caught fire around the control panel which is where the gas goes in, the bottle was almost empty so I was hoping that it would last the weekend, thinking perhaps there might have been a leak although I didn't smell anything. I won't be buying another thats for sure! It could have been a lot worse but thankfully nobody was hurt and my dogs were ok but only because of a complete stranger camped next door, people I knew stood and watched it burn.

I connected the fridge to the gas at home before I left, I put washing up liquid along the ful length to see if there were any leaks. The fridge was kept indoors so the clips were still spotless. If there were any leaks they weren't obvious and they weren't on the hose itself. As for the reason, I have come to the conclusion that I am not meant to be camping. last easter was a disaster too. I feel like somebody "up there" doesn't like me and is playing with my life just for their own amusement as on top of all this my dog went lame yesterday for the first time in his life.

what a horrific experience. I am very sorry to hear the very very traumatic experience you have had. I do think its a good advert for umbrella cooking or a utility tent - more i hear about gas this weekend, the more you realise how careful you have to be.... as for appliance checking it should be done as a matter of course... you get your household appliances checked and you use them more often, but, i have to admit its something i hadn't thought of getting checked. where do you get them checked anyway?
------------- Camped since 2008 and still loving it!

Just trying to work out what happened here, not to apportion blame, but we never attach our gas bottles to appliances until we arrive on site, since things can work loose when packed in a car or trailer, with other stuff up against them and with the vibrations and jolts during a journey.
We also remove all hoses when the items are in storage, between uses, so there's no residual gas. Did you keep your fridge attached to the gas bottle whilst in storage at home?
the gas bottle was stored in a shed not connected to the fridge. The clips were ok when I arrived as was the hose as there was nowhere in the car that it could have been damaged. I loaded it into the car and packed soft stuff around it so that it didn't move as I always did. If there was a fault or a leak it was not in the hose or the clip and when it happened nobody could understand why it was not at the point where the pilot light was. I did not notice any smell of gas at any time and I am paranoid about such things so constantly checking. The fridge had plenty of ventilation and was well away from the fly sheet of the tent. I am not suggesting for a minute that these fridges are dangerous, I thought mine was the best thing ever but it obviously had a fault I was not aware of. It could have been a lot worse, the bedroom area of the tent survived as it was just the front that burned.

the fridge went in the skip along with the tent. The side that caught fire was melted along with the whole control panel and the wiring that you could just about see inside. I may contact the manufacturer but I don't think it will make much difference. I'm glad to be home and even more so that my dogs were ok and nobody was injured. It says a lot when people you know watch your tent burn not knowing or apparently caring whether you were inside while complete strangers put it out and help you sort it all out with offers of food, cups of tea and a bed for the night. I have sat and cried a lot and am still to unpack the car which has to be done today as I am back at work tomorrow. If I can get a replacement set of pole for the weathermaster from coleman that will be sold. I am in no hurry to go to any more agility shows or spend another night in a tent.
ETA: I did a quick search and this was the one that I had for anyone that is concerned;

Seriously, since the fridge wasn't old or damaged, a letter to the manufacturer might help - this might have been from a faulty batch or something?
Perish the thought...
Hope you can keep smiling, stormchaser2005. Instead of thinking negative things are happening, maybe you can look at it this way; you certainly had a lucky escape, so maybe fate was smiling on you after all!
