I have an old and tatty Bari 3 polycotton pyramid style tent. I use it for festivals as it was cheap . I was wondering if it's possible to paint a polycotton tent to make it colourful and funky, without damaging it and allowing the water in!!

Any ideas? and if I could, what paint/dye should I use and how to go about it? I figured someone on here would know such a thing!

If tyou don't want to paint the actual tent use a banner or flags and go for it on them, glow-in-the-dark paint is excellent because it will help you find tent in the dark.

You can also find glow tape which you can stick all over, make designs, hang things off the ropes etc and then just peel it off.

Thanks - I have all that, bunting, solar lights, flags, long pole with flying dragon! but I fancied tarting up the actual tent as it's so tatty.

Fabric paint should be OK, so long as you waterproof it afterwards.  You need ValBarley on this one....

Dylon sell pots of fabric paint to use on all different kinds of fabric - paint your design then you need to iron it through a cloth/tea towell to make it waterproof.

Thanks - I'm going to ring them later to discuss their dyes and the effects :-)

Easy peasy!

Dylon fabric dyes (there are 2 types for light or dark coloured material, so it depends which part of the canvas you are painting)

Test the material first by using either a small corner or the pole bag if it's the same material

Make a stencil of what you want to put on it, draw round with a fabric pencil (it will rub of the mark then) and paint it.

After it drys, place a teatowel over and press with the iron

I then put fabsil in a handsprayer and went over the painted bits in case it had affected the waterproofing in the material

Testing on the pole bag

first panel..

First few panels done

Sprayed with fabsil and waiting to dry

All dry

In use!

Good Luck! (The first splodge of paint is the worst!)

Wow, both the painted tents look amazing! Are you an artist Val or did you use templates?

I want a canvas tent now, just so I can paint it!
