Hi all,
I've spent all afternoon looking around the display at Cross Camping, a few miles off the M11 Junction 11 SG8 6EY
So, I've been looking at replacing my tents with a good quality Poly-Cotton or Canvas tent for a while and I spoke to Gary (Cross Camping) and James (Camping Travel Store) last week who told me they were having this exhibition.
James has bought a very wide selection of Cabanon and Karsten tents and they are all on display as you drive into the garden centre.
Now it is about 1.5hrs drive from me but as I wanted to see the Cabanon Barbados actually pitched thought it would be well worth the trip.
Thought it would be also nice to see the Karsten's in the flesh as I've never seen one.
So got down there about 14.00 and had a good look round all of the tents, the Cabanon Barbados is very nice but has two very large bags!
I know the Guadeloupe is only one bag but still large and heavy.
We then spoke to James&Suzie for at least an hour about the Karsten tents and going through the features and how they can be tailored to suit what you want.
James then deflated the 280 POD and pumped it back up then we attached the comfort awning, James then attached the rain awning to the front of the Comfort awning.
It's not until you see these tents do you fully realise just how good they are and the quality is just amazing.
I thought the Cabanon canvas and ground sheet was good but you can still feel the difference between them and the Karsten.
Quite incredible, and you can definitely see why they cost so much money.
So he's me looking for ages now, and maybe going to buy a Cabanon Guadeloupe for about £650.
Then end up buying the Karsten 280POD in light green with comfort awning for £1400
Yeah bit of a shocker, but the speed of pitching the relatively small pack size for an inflatable and just the sheer quality made it worth buying.
I would sooner stop messing about and spend more on quality....and so I did!
The Wife and myself have never really been interested in the inflatable tents and the wife never had much faith until we saw this!
The rubber tube is extruded in one so no joins anywhere. The webbing mesh that goes round it is very strong.
So we bought this one but in light green:-
It shows the 280Pod with comfort awning attached, just zips in very quickly.
Myself and James looking into the 280POD
This shows the interior size of the 280pod with a single SIM laid out:-
A couple of the other tents, although there are many more on display that we didn't get photos of:-
If you've never seen a Karsten tent try and get down to see these on display
James has bought quite a few with lots of different attachments and configurations and colours.
It's not until you see them and feel the quality of the groundsheet and canvas do you realise just what you're paying for.
It may take you a couple of hours to get there but as these tents do cost a lot of money it's well worth the fuel and travel time to see them in the flesh.
It was also great to meet James and Suzie and they do spend loads of time talking you through everything, which included the taking down and erecting of the POD.
A very happy and satisfied customer.
If these are a bit too expensive nip over to Gary in Cross Camping and see all of his tents on display, then go into the garden centre for a nice drink and in our case the scones were very nice!
Just waiting now for mine to be delivered and I will report back with a review in the review section.
Cheers
Ian

Mucker,
May I enquire what spec you are hoping to get please?
At this moment in time, I am thinking of a 300, with a Sleeping Extension, Comfort Awning, Rain Awning and may be the Combi-Awning too. I'd like an inner tent for the sleeping extension, however, it may be too costly an add-on.

The main one is extending the sleeping extension, to take camp beds. Still waiting for Karsten to confirm they are happy to do it. Last I heard, James was in the process of producing a drawing for them. I've told him there's no rush, and as he's busy with displays and all these folk actually putting in orders and paying up, I'm not even sure if he's sent it off yet!
Other things that need confirming (more what the finished article is going to be like, rather than if they'll do it, as it seems they will) are things like windows to main pod door, and zip across the bottom of the door. Flat front to the awnings (the standard flat front on the tunnel tent doesn't reach the floor, as it has a bath-tub SIG. However, an available pic of someone else's flat front to awning shows it reaching the floor, plus mud flaps, so just need to emphasise my requirements). There's then the matter of having the awning zip on my 350 needing to be the size they are on the 325/300, so I can swap awnings and sleeping extension around as required (and therefore the smaller awnings). Add in our requirement for messing around with colour schemes, and all in all... nothing is straight forward, as virtually nothing is standard!!
I must add, James has been an absolute star, although I suspect his face will drop when he see's us wandering over again tomorrow lunchtime!!
I've felt the need to promise him there will be a definite order, once everything is finalised, as I feared otherwise, he'd be tempted to tell me to eff off!! Talk about awkward customers!!

Hi DK,
This picture:-
Shows I think it was a 325, although it could have been a 300! with bedroom extension, comfort awning front wall and rain awning.
It was expensive I can't remember exactly how much now though.
Cheers

Would be interesting to see or know the details of the construction of the tubes in the mass market Outwell's / Vango's etc by comparison. Never managed to find a pic of an Outwell airbeam
Jim
Hi Jim,
This video shows a Vango airbeam pole that exploded.
You do get to see what the tube looks like, with the tent material also ripped that goes round it!
I have to say the tube does look a little on the thin side.
Cheers
Ian
WOW!!
We use thicker bags in our loo bucket!
One of the quotes I made, after seeing the Karsten for the first time, and leaning on a pole, was "It's like leaning on a lamp post"!
A, they are solid, and B, that material used in making the tubes is extremely similar to what we line clapped out industrial gutters with... which comes with a 20 year guarantee!
