I still wouldn't cook in a tent. It's just not safe, no matter how careful you are or how big your tent is, in fact the bigger the tent the more the potential damage and danger.

Its much better to cook outside though,or at least in a canopy/porch for safety sake and all that boiling just makes condensation you can well do without, its got to go somewhere .
have you read the last weekends threads on cookers just catching alight for no reason ?
Its not safe , don't recommend it.

I would rather cook in the rain under my makeshift sun canopy than cook in my tent. There are reasons why there is a no cooking sign on it!

If you want to risk it, go ahead

But ............

Fire,

Spilt boiling water and ground sheets are not a good combination  ( yes I have the scars to prove it )

Gas leaks

240 volts is enough to be lethal

Condensation

all very good reasons why we don't cook in tents, nor do we recommend it to newbies.

I AGREE with the NEVER cook in tents people. There is absolutely no need to ever cook in a tent when it's so simple to set up a canopy outside or have a utility tent. Big expeditions typically use a separate tent for cooking - for safety, and to ensure that they don't lose everything in the event of an accident.

Are you saying no cooking in any tent or just nylon ones, what about cooking in the poly cotton or the canvas ones?

Good question as canvas tents have 'kitchen' areas.

Also, that means taking the camp kitchen(s) and cooker(s) in and out each time taking the stuff off your shelves as surely you can't leave them outside for the wind to blow over? I'm all for safety but what is the 'best practice' on this issue? Especially if you don't want/can't afford to buy a kitchen tent (without the argument that you can't afford not to).

Before we bought our kitchen tent we kept our kitchen outside with bbq cover over it this protected it from the elements so to speak, if it was raining we had a tiny porch we used we also had another 2 exits in case anything happened, getting a utility tent is one of the best things I have ever done and even if I bought a canvas tent or a tent with a canopy or porch would prob use that for storage and continue with the utility tent!

If people want to cook in their tents and risk their own lives as well as the lives of their families then that is their choice but please do not recommend cooking inside a tent to newbies.

No on can know for sure that their gas is safe (there are unfortunatly, threads on this forum about tent fires, leaking gas etc) and condensation caused by cooking doesnt  mix well with electricity.

As for not cooking on grass, if by some slight chance, the grass did catch fire, then at least people do not have to fight their way out of a tent to get to safety.

Recommending that people cook in the road? Smart idea. Dont worry about cars, lorries etc, I am sure they wont mind waiting until the meal is ready.

No one has ever suggested cooking in the rain and there are plenty of options for safer and dry cooking.

Hopefully you will never have a gasleak or a loose spark that can potentially burn your tent to the ground in seconds

Stay safe

Angie

Its completely up to yourself, and I daresay that you will probably sail through camping life and cooking in a tent with no mishaps.  Personally I just think its too much of  chance to take and I'll stick with the great outdoors or my utility tent.

Just as a matter of interest if cooking on grass could start a fire.........what about the ground sheet

Speaking of flare ups.....a work mate of mine has one of those butane camping stoves, as do I - the ones that cost a tenner from Asda now. We were having a cooking contest one lunch time on the back of his truck - who could do the best bacon and fried bread - and all of a sudden, his cooker went up in flames - BIG flames - all from around the gas cylinder. This was despite the gas cylinder being properly seated, and with no smell of leaking gas before hand. The only thing we can think of is that perhaps a small bit of dirt had got in between the cylinder and the pipework and had caused gas to leak out. If this had been in a tent, with sleeping bags, plastic all over the place and so on...then it would have taken the whole lot up. Luckily we were able to lob it across a field and let it burn out.
