Hi all
A few weeks every year we read on here about the disasters caused by the wind, to family sized tents and campers holidays are spoilt and expensive equipment gets damaged some beyond repair.
Now some of this can be stopped by Preparing for these strong winds.
Choosing a pitch if possible on exposed coastal sites.
inland sites do not usually experience dangerous wind speeds but also follow this routine if possible.
Try to find a pitch close to an edge with the rear of your tent to the prevailing wind. If you don't know which direction the prevailing wind comes from and you don't have a compass look at the trees around you, you will see that they lean away from the prevailing wind.
Pegging Out. This is really the most important operation to get right, and the use of the correct pegs for the job.
The wire pegs normally given with new tents are not safe for large family tents and should not be used not even for a windbreaker, Since the development of the Delta ground Anchor many tents have already survived strong wind that probably would not have. Simplifying the design when the wind gusts, a normal peg gets the same treatment as you and I give a stick in the ground to loosen it by pulling back and forward then out,The delta pegs design does not do this when the wind gusts and the tent pulls the guy rope the delta pegs arm is lifted and the other end connected to the ground shaft is driven further in just like and anchor from a 100,000 ton tanker is held on the sand under the sea. Say no more, only ever person who uses guy ropes should in my opinion use them.
Alright you forgot to get your delta pegs and you have your guys pegged with normal pegs and the wind start to gust, your next best bet is to cross peg, take another long peg and drive it in at 90deg across the front of the guy rope peg. this will help stop the guy rope peg been pulled forward every time the wind gusts so it will stay in the ground longer.
If you have enough spare pegs this double pegging can also be done on the pegging down rubbers on the windward side of the tent.
What to do if your guy ropes attachment to your tent gives way or tears off, this is why every camper should take a pack of Clingon with them these little connecter will attach themselves to the material of the tent and you have your guy rope back, and are also useful for adding additional guys, should the wind get really bad.
Just Google clingons and order a pack or two and keep them set up in their own bag with a Delta peg ready for instant use they may save your tent and holiday.
And not quite so important but the safest and easiest way to to adjust your guy ropes is to use the Line-lok system from Cleats.co.uk.
Always carry a selection of pegs and spare guy ropes with you they don't take up that much room and may save your holiday.
It dose not cost a lot to be safe.please give it a lot of thought.
And remember that you could spend a lifetime camping and not experience very strong winds
Hope this post may help a few of our new members and my apology's to the old crew for boring you again
Regards
Rex

I'll be hard but I'll try and get over it, Rex...

May I add the tip of aiming carefully when holding the peg with one and the mallet with the other hand? Try and maintain a concentrated hand to eye coordination on both. And if, after all, you do hit a finger; well, you've seven others...

Thanks Rex, this is useful, especially as we have a lot of first time campers of late.

Last year a tornado hit our site and took 2 tents straight up in the air about 10 feet, then a few seconds later dropped them back down in a heap, miraculously missing all other tents, campfires, cars and people. You havent seen so many people checking their tents were properly pegged out in such a hurry. We sat, safe and sound in the knowledge that every guy was delta'd and checked morning and night. It only takes a minute or two for a lot of reassurance. How awful would it be to lose your own tent and maybe wreck someone elses as well.

Hi Charlies Mommy
If you use the line-Lok adjusters on your guy ropes and Delta pegs you will never need to check them only during a gale
They really do stay put and are so easy to ajust, and cheap
Regards
Rex.

I think I'm done for Rex, I've paid a premium for a pitch facing the atlantic

The side door will come in handy ...

I do of course have enough Deltas to do all the guys though.

Thanks Rex.

Found that very usefull.

After reading a bit about Delta pegs on here we actually ordered some the other day thank goodness.  Will take on board your tip about double pegging and we are replaceing the pegs that came with the tent for the ones we used to use on our awning - they survivedmany a windy lake district day so should do the job OK.

Will also take on board the mallet tip - get hubby to hold the poles whilst I hit his fingers - that was it wasn't it????

Rex,
I have been planning some line-lok clips - even if we dont really *need* them as such, but even with them, I would still do my walkaround ritual, for me its part of going camping :-)

Yeah, been there done that, still do the ritual walk around just to check as I have done for the past 20 odd years and the only difference is I only check... no adjustment required, even after 5 days, very impressed.  Delta's and line lok clips what a combo.....

Hi again.
Yes Bolan, the same here, If your tent is capable of withstanding a gale the two Items you mentioned will insure it does. And just in case the tent does give way the Clingons will save campers sitting out in the rain holding up the tent until the weather eases off.
All the best
Rex,

Hi Rex

Do you recommend the plastic delta peg or the metal ones?

Also, which way do they dig into the ground? With the spike pointing in towards the tent undergrund, or away from it?

Cheers

Hi stknick
Hi have got 30 composite ones that I use on all my guys and tarp guys and one at each corner of the tent
I have Just ordered 4 S/S ones to go with my 12" and 8" bivy pegs that I use in stony ground as I only have four main Guy ropes on our frame tents,if I had 10 guys then I personally would have 10 s/s ones. They both work they are both strong and will last, for me they will now cover normal pitches and hard stony ground, But for normal ground the composite ones are quite adequate.
If you require good rock pegs as they are called check out carp fishing bivvy pegs on eBay for some good deals on [[carp fishing bivvy pegs]] these are without doubt the best rock pegs made to go with the delta S/S pegs for hard ground.
All the best
Rex.

Line-loks ordered last night and already despatched ! I went for the dayglo ones, to go with our yellow outwell guy lines - no chance of anyone falling over our guys at night unless they are really, seriously wasted - but then at least they wont feel the pain (of me kicking them up the *rse Bishop Brennan style, for waking us all up).

Hi CM
Yes I use the glow ones when you look out on a night, it is like a lot of firefly's around your tent
