I'm quite new to camping but was wondering how early in the season you guys go. I know it depends on weather obviously but do some of you brave the cold and go off season?

Hello there, and welcome to the site!
Some people will and do camp all year round.
However, realistically, you wont see many tents on sites until April. Many more wont be camping till July end of term.
If you have the right tent and the right gear, go when you want to, I say.

Planned for next year, hopefully!
Summer Solstice wild camp.
Chilled in a Field, July.
Crantock, August. Fouth year with the fantastic Quechua Base Seconds 4.2!
..... and the odd night wild camping in my Argos 1 man tent...

Hi John, thanks for that, I can't wait to start again this year but I think -6 with the kids might just be pushing it.

Thanks for the welcome Finn, I think your right, I was going to go near the end of April so should be ok I hope. I think it's amazing some people go earlier than this! I'm just getting fed up of the wintry days and trying to think ahead to cheer myself up!!

We went in the Easter Holidays last year to try out our new tent and we were a bit cold. Easter is later this year so depending on the forecast we might go, I think our first holiday will be May Spring Bank Holiday week. The trouble with the British weather it you can have 3 seasons in a day. As long as your warm in bed you'll be ok from early spring.

Our first weekend might be easter or the royal wedding weekend, but it will all depend on the weather.
------------- Had to give up the camping due to the rubbish Weather and Wind, so got myself a campervan!

I'd like to go tomorrow, but husband says no! He is such a killjoy.
You'll be glad he said no, it's going to be cold over this weekend.

Fan heaters are cheap enough, but get one with a tilt safety cut off if you can. As for sleeping bags, if yours aren't up to the job, putting a duvet over them will have a huge effect.
Also put a blanket or similar under you, on the airbed and even below it too. A lot of cold comes up from the ground via the air in the airbed. So insulating the bed from the ground, and the bed from you, warms you up quite a bit.
Over all though, a duvet thrown over a sleeping bag works very well, and is a good, cheap option compared to expensive "technical" sleeping bags if you have space in the car.
As for sleeping bags, the mummy style ones keep you warmer but do restrict movement somewhat. I can stand them for a few days but for longer camps I use the rectangular "envelope" style ones.
Oh, hot water bottles are excellent in the colder months too!
