One for Jean or anyone out there with a sewing talent.

Hi, I have a project in mind and wondered if it would be feasible to sew tent canvas - cotton - at home on a domestic sewing machine?

Two tent repair firms have turned me down so far, so (pardon the pun) it's back in my court.

I want to make an alternative sun canopy - with sides - for our frame tent, that include PVC windows which can be rolled up or down as desired.

Would an ordinary domestic electric machine cope - given using the right needles for strong fabric, and cotton thread.

And, how would you sew PVC to cotton - reinforce the edges with tape???

Any thoughts gratefully received, as it looks as though this project will be mine to deliver

Not any domestic machine that I have ever owned. That's pretty thick, you could try sewing by hand?

I once sewed a groundsheet 6ft. x 4ft. into a heavy canvas ridge tent. It was a pig of a job, but I managed it on an old treadle Singer machine - the ancient iron variety with the gold Egyptian pattern on the black. I used strong needles and heavy duty thread, and it did the job pretty well.

I don't know how you would strengthen the PVC. Tape would probably do it. I should really have done that to the groundsheet before sewing it into the tent, as it does get quite stressed and I'm lucky it hasn't pulled away over the years.

If you haven't got an old iron Singer, it might be worth the investment for tent repairs, as they're cheap as chips to buy these days. And if it doesn't do the job, you can always sell it again.

I love to hear about home tentage projects. Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

I used my old Singer treadle machine too. I doubt that a modern electric machine would cope with it, unless it was an industrial machine.

The PVC is very tough. I just folded the edge over & machined it onto the canvas (with a twice folded over hem), and never had any problems with it since. If you want to do it the way I did, fold the edge of the canvas over twice, fold the edge of the PVC over once, then hook the two folded edges onto each other (a bit like a french seam), and machine two rows of stitching down it about a quarter of an inch apart.

I used needles for 'jeans' and strong Gutermann thread. As FoO says, treadle machines are cheap as chips these days, so it would be well worth buying one even if you only use it for this one job.

I agree a modern machine wouldn't cope. However an older one would. I have a new Janome (not a cheap model) that faints at the sight of canvas, but my 25 year old Jones cuts through it like butter! It has a much heftier motor in it. As said above, use a heavy weight needle and thread and you will be fine.
Cotton herringbone tape would help stabilise the edges of the PVC.
I have made a couple of tarps, but never attempted to put windows in. Do keep us updated with your progress!

Hi you can sew a canvas tent with a domestic machine but as others have allready said on here it depends on the machine with the right one it is easy the wife has a new machine it does all the fancy stitches and stuff but it will not do canvas she also has a 40yr old Viceroy machine very solid built this one does heavy canvas with ease if you decide to give it a try instead of buying new canvas why not buy an old frame tent of fleabay works out a lot cheaper than buying new canvas this is what we did when our relum was ripped open with a fallen branch.
Wife replaced one whole side of the tent using the the old tent we bought but had to reuse the original pvc window just sew the pvc as JK98 described earlier
Here is the wifey doing her sewing stuff

Around the edge of the window there is a strip of burgundy canvas as a stiffener you can see the new stitching in it also if you look at the thread coming out of the machine you can see it is pretty strong think it is a No30 cotton thread wife had to buy a load of it as did not find any for sale in single reels as mostly sold for industry not this modern thread stuff oh! make sure you use a wide a stitch as possible.
Hope this helps you out

Hi Bridgeywidge,

Saw this on fleabay last week, and then couldn't find your query !

This is UK based so would it be easier to get than the Esvo site?

the listing has finished. But i would just e mail the seller.

Hi everyone and thanks so much for all your really comprehensive and helpful replies. I'm really chuffed at the effort taken .

Ah, old Singer machines, yes, we had one at home and it sewed beautifully (hand not treadle tho'). Not sure it's around still, my sis might have it. Mmmm. There's a thought. I have a 12-year old 'Brother' so maybe that won't cut the mustard.

I've been planning this for the last 3 years but have only just thought of a full canopy, not just sides that tie on to the sun canopy. I think a secondary one would work better and not damage the original.

I'll keep you posted but it may be some time - knee deep in my first year MA assignments and finding too many distractions!!!

Thanks again lovely UKCS peeps

Well, one step closer... I put the tent up today and have measured the canopy and calculated the various quantities of 'stuff and notions' I need.

Now just to tot it all up using the lovely links above and then see if my machine will cope or if I need alternative horsepower .

Thanks again for all the suggestions and advice.

Can't help (at all) with the sewing, just to say 'good luck'. I know my old friend Jean once made a canvas tent big enough to fit 8 folks with room to spare.

Said she'd sown it in her loft, with her husband helping her move and feed the longer lengths, and that it was 'an absolute pig of a job' and one she never did it again

Thanks, when - or if - I complete it, I'll post some pics. Planning on taking with us in July when Esther gets her annual outing.

SNAP!!!!

Just back from a wet weekend away last week and we both decided it was a good idea to make a small side extension to go on the side of our Cabanon Andorra's front canopy. Only 5' wide x 3'6" deep x 6'6" tall connected to the support rail on the canopy, with a straight tall back wall with a window in each of the 3 sides, as the type in the Cabanon kitchen. Just big enought to fit cooking stuff under but not to big as to pay more for a bigger pitch. Have the roof material a 1.5mtr sq section of dark green  Acrylic Canvas PU Coated material to keep the wet stuff out just need to find some cream cotton canvas for the sides and some PVC material for the skirt. Have the clear window material just could'nt find the mesh but thanks again to this site and bridgeywidge for asking the question I have found that. I have an old Pfaff 1229 sewing machine If I let it it would stitch my boots together. Thank you too hlk01 for the link to the mesh.

I'll show you mine, if you show me yours...

I'm planning on an 'open ended' canopy, a bit like the extensions on 'modern' tents but a bit more angular(?).

Enclosing the front too sounds a grand plan but I might just try this one first and add it at a later date...

I couldn't find PVC skirt material, although you can get the mudflaps on the Esvo site (which is where I bought my fabric from thanks to this forum).

My existing canopy is 'just' canvas and holds off the rain OK without a coating (although it pools - I'm not sure how my new canopy will cope with that...).

Good luck and let us know how you get on tentfluff/Steve!
