Hi, I have just purchased a car radio and speakers for my van. I have fitted the speakers and run the wire to the place where I am going to install the car radio. I have installed radios and speakers before to cars but never a caravan. The problem I have is the radio connection, I have read plenty of advice on several sites but I'm still unsure. I want to connect the radio to the 12v lighting as this seems to be the easiest way but which are my 12v lights, are they the 2 front lights that have shades on or are they the little spot lights. When I know which lights to connect the radio to the next step is which wires go to where. Also would the fuse be ok to cope with the radio power, please help.
better wired direct to the battery through a fuse on the live side.failing this the memory will go each time you switch of the main switch for the lights.
I would be careful trying to wire a car radio up to the lighting system as this caused a major problem for somebody quite recently if you click on the link.
I really don't mean to be rude, but if you're struggling to identify 12v supplies then perhaps this should be wired up by someone else? The 12v supply in the car is from a 12v battery, the same is true (essentially) for the caravan.
The 12v lighting can handle a radio supply, but you need to identify between the positive and negative terminals to ensure it's wired properly, but as others have indicated you're better off with a dedicated supply, espcially with regards to the memory back-up wiring (permanent or un-switched live).
Thanks for all your advice, I have done the job and it all works fine. I have connected it up to the spot lights. The problem I had was the colour coding of the spot wires (Green/Black stripe & Red/White stripe) Am not bothered about the memory in the unit.
