I have been meaning to investigate my childhood tent for some time and had memories of a huge tent in brown and orange, with flowery curtains. I've just put it up and it's green! It's quite a faded green with a beige roof and an integrated short front canopy in dark green. The inside of the tent shows the original colour, a brighter lime green - but I was right on one thing, the curtains are flowery and it is they that are brown and orange.

It's called a Stan Evans standard 6. It has one J door and a window beside it on the front and then another window on the right side. On the left there is a kitchen annexe with orange plastic sides and a mesh window.

I think I'll start using this tent as it's such a waste to have it and keep it in my parents loft. It's quite large inside and I would imagine would be a lovely tent to use for a week or a fortnights holiday.

I wish I could post the pics but my camera got sand in it at the beach last week and although it's still taking pictures the storage card won't read on the computer. I'm gutted about that because I've been planning to post about this tent for some time.

Now for the bad news. It is supposed to have six guys attached to the edge of the roof all around. One has come off. It has quite a few rubbers missing and some feet too. But the worst thing of all is that at least 5 of the poles need straightening as the last time it was used it got quite a bit of damage in a storm. One of the side legs won't even meet the ground. Despite that when it's (mostly) pegged down it doesn't look too wonky! Maybe I should just use it as it is.

What do you think, is it worth fixing up?

I finally got my sand ridden memory card to co-operate for me. I hope someone here knows something about the manufacturer, the tent was bought new in 1974 when I was one.

The Hessian bag which held the poles has disintegrated. Since the poles are colour coded yellow (back) red (middle) and blue (front) I quite like the idea of putting the coloured poles in separate bags to make it a bit easier to carry. Has anyone got a clue where long bags suitable for steel framed tent poles could be bought, or is it something I'll have to make.

those curtains look familiar......

The pole bags are easy to make from old flysheet material, or even easier, an old anorak, just cut off the sleeves!

Hi,

I found this forum after a Google search for 'Stan Evans tents'

Stan Evans is actually my granddad, and ran the family business in Warrington, producing a whole range of tents, trailer tents and so on.

It's great to see that you are still finding use for the tents.

Lyndon

Lyndon, it is a much loved tent that has served my family for many years and is going to be restored so that it can continue to be used. I can't believe that you've popped up with this information! My tent was bought in 1974 - how does that tie in?

It would be interesting to know a little more about the company. How long did your Grandad make the tents for?

And of course I want to know, do you have one of the tents, or did you have one when you were little.

Hi,

I remember walking around the factory when I was maybe 5 years old, but unfortunately they ceased trading shortly after wards. And because I was young, I didn't know too much about the business itself.

My uncle, Stuart Evans, was instrumental to the business and he designed a lot of the tents. He is the managing director of Evans House, which is a large industrial building in the centre of Warrington.

In their hay-day Stan Evans Tent Manufacturers took up the top two floors of Evans House. The top floor was the shop, and show rooms, and the floor below was used for manufacturing tents. I believe they had around 60 employees at one point. The business took a down-turn because of spate of poor weather, and increasing competition from abroad, and they decided to wrap up the tent manufacturing company, and instead focus on letting space in Evans House.

This is a picture of Evans House, that I found on the internet:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/uk_greg/4160858202/in/photostream/

As kids we used to set up a small 2 man tent and play about in it in the garden. It was great fun. We also set up a bigger tent, which looks exactly like the one you have - it's possibly the same model. But unfortunately I don't think we still have it. I'd be happy to take a look though.

Cheers,
Lyndon

Obviously the company had distribution if my parents were able to buy it in Northern Ireland. I love the pic of Evans house.

I'm sure I can't be the only one with a Stan Evans tent!

Thanks Emerald1 for that ebay link...

If I remember correctly Stan Evans's shop was on the top floor of a mill in Orford Lane Warrington and quite a trek upstairs.

We spent 3-4 weeks a year in a Stan Evans tent from late 60's/early 70's up until mid 70's whereupon we bought a Stan Evans trailor tent which did another 15 years at least. My dad only got rid when mum couldn't help him put it up any more, but his children used it for some time afterwards.
Terrific quality, never leaked, great customer service, my dad swore by them.
We even had an extension to put on the front fitted by the company which had windows all round and was a big improvement for a 6 strong family.

Many, many happy days in Bolmynnedd, Llanbedrog near Pwllheli.

I remember it being tremendously heavy to put up and flaped & rocked like mad in the wind with slightly bent poles a regular occurance but it never blew down unlike many other makes on the same field. I remember a conversation Dad had with Stan about canvas quality and Stan insisted on a heavier gauge canvas for longevity and waterproof quality.

Rubbers needed replacing regularly (cut up old inner tubes did the job)

I remember the sales floor in Evans house very well, Dad was always looking for improvement he could make to our kit.
I think I used it for a while with my family but eventually had to buy an 'inferior' make as Stan had gone out of business by the late 80's. To be fair that tent (Conway) did several years of good service but without Dads seal of approval of ultimate quality. It was certainly lighter!

Happy days...

It looks a lovely tent Victoria, I think you will have a great time bringing her back to glory.

How nice too to hear some history about Stan Evens tents.

It is brilliant to read peoples memories regarding these tents - makes me very proud to have mine. I am looking forward to using it in about 6 weeks time - I will take some photos and post them on here.
