After looking at all the options, I've finally placed an order for a replacement for our Icarus 500. We settled on a "Familia 6" from Obelink.

https://www.obelink.co.uk/tents/tunnel-tents/obelink-familia-6.html

The order was placed yesterday - fingers crossed it arrives in time for a short break we have planned for next Monday.

Do any of the Familia 6 / 4 owners here have any tips they'd like to pass on? I'm planning to make a footprint for it from a cheap tarp, not sure what to do for carpet. I have the Icarus 500 carpet to use for the moment, but I might be selling that with the tent.

Any pitching tips? I'll be pitching it solo, was planning to do it the same way as the Icarus; peg out the corners then put the poles in one at a time starting from the middle. Will this work with a bigger tent?

Next thing on the list is a trailor - hope it fits in the car for Monday though!

Happy new tent!!

I managed to solo pitch my large polycotton tunnel that way, both for my initial practice pitch, and my first pitch proper...

However, the first, and most notable, difference I see between my tent and yours is the length of the pole sleeves. Mine only cover the roof, so even when standing on the middle pole, I can (reasonably comfortably) feed the next pole through, despite them being big and awkward (when made up into the full arch).

A quick look at yours shows the sleeves being a lot longer, coming right down to approx. knee height, and I'd fear once it was stood up on the central pole, the ground would get in the way of getting the remaining poles in!

I'm guessing of course, as I have no experience of this tent (other than admiring pics of it... more than once!

I take it you've seen this Video?

Thanks for the replies - I have watched the video a few times over the past months (like kid before Christmas!).

Mucker - I was planning on connecting the poles as I fed them through the sleeves rather than building all the poles then feeding them through. Can you see any problems with this plan?

I have a delivery tracking ref already! Looks like it will make it here before next Monday's trip .

In all honesty, J&C, yes, I believe that would still be awkward, at best. Even feeding one section at a time, that leaves a lot of pole sections on the ground trying to tangle themselves together, plus the fact that the gap between bottom of pole sleeve and the ground probably equates to half the length of one single pole section? (I think I had 2 full pole sections exposed below each side of my sleeves, when erected).

I have a similar set up now (on my awnings), where the sleeve goes all the way to the bottom, but I can unzip that sleeve to effectively reduce it's length, for this very purpose. I probably feed my pole through about 2ft of sleeve, before zipping it back closed, so where as the design on my tent (awnings) make that job easier than my Filey, the design of yours appears to make that more difficult!
I'd be surprised if you can feed your poles through whilst the tent is stood up, and expect you'll need to feed them all in, before standing up, as per the vid... but I must stress it's complete guesswork on my part, not having seen this tent in the flesh, and I could well be wrong. In fact, I sincerely hope I am.

Hopefully, someone who has this experience will pipe up with something more positive to say. Failing that, I guess you'll just have to wait, and give it a try.

I'd be very interested in the results though, when you do try it... particularly if it's a success! Good luck!

Well put by Mucker & i totally agree.

Whilst i don't have a Familia i do ( for the last year)have a trail 400 which seems to use the same aluminium poles, mine being internal as opposed to external.
The poles are fine & fit for purpose though are not of the same quality alloy as found on my previous khyam tents, & once you have 7 metres of them connected together there is a chance of rounding at the connection points especially if trying to force them where they don't want to go.

I the video it shows you only need 2 people for a short time & i'm sure you could call on a camping neighbour to lend a hand for 2 mins.

A couple of things that i needed to replace on mine were the poor quality pegs & guy runners ( the guy lines are passable)

Hope i've not put a negative slant on things as we are really really pleased with the quality & feel of our trail 400. A few minor gripes but it offers sooo much better value in a new tent than can be found at your usual UK retailers.

Congrats & enjoy your new tent , Obelink are great to deal with.

We have the palamos 6 and put the poles together after feeding them individually through the top sleeve (no side sleeves), getting the centre section eyelets on the spikes isn't the easiest task (this is hubby's job as I just can't do it).

Regarding pegs / guys - I have a box filled with various pegs and guys. I use rock pegs mostly and generally throw away the pegs that come with the tent (except for a backpacking tent I bought recently that came with some decent alloy pegs).

I vaguely recall reading some comments about the poles being hard to get into the sleeves when new. I can't remember if it was specific to the tent or a general comment though.

If I do struggle solo, the wife will be on hand, but usually she takes our son off to explore. There's two kids now (two month old new addition) but the oldest is almost old enough to be useful!

We have just bought an Obelink Trail 600 (we actually had to go to the Netherlands for it!) and I had a changce to see them all up.

I really liked the Familia 6 but I went for the trail because of the extra faff in having to have 2 people to put it up. In the familia, you have to, as far as I can see, pitch the fly, then zip in the groundsheet, then go round and take all of the fly pegs out in order to peg the groundsheet down and re-peg it all again.

The trail 600 is difficult in a different way - you have to peg the groundsheet down, lay out all of the hoops on the sheet, then zip the tent over the top like a giant duvet cover. You then have to climb inside (not dignified) and stand up the hoops one by one and zip them into the pole sleeves. As I said, not dignified....

It's Arrived!

I was a bit disappointed when I saw the boxes it came in.

This was the box for the extension / bedrooms / extension groundsheet.

And this was the box for the main tent, zig and poles.

After opening everything up and giving it a good check everything looks fine though.

The pack size is about what I was expecting. It's split into three very generously sized bags (almost too big). Going right to left below, you have the pole bag, the main tent and zig bag, then the extension, extension groundsheet and inner tent in the third bag. The green bag is an Icarus 500 for comparison.

I have since repacked the third bag to half the length and a bit fatter (about the same size as the Icarus 500, just a bit shorter).

As informed (and expected) the pegs it came with are next to useless. The guys are fairly basic, but serviceable.

All in all I am very pleased. The quality of the materials is a mile above what I'm used to with the Icarus 500. Reminded me of my early years camping with the scouts in giant cotton ridge tents.

I've had a quick look round for signs of dodgy sewing and messy finishing, but it all looks good at the moment. I haven't unrolled it all though.

It looks like I'm not going to be able to get it out for a trial pitch before Monday though - we have guests staying this weekend.

If anyone is interested in pics of any details, let me know and I'll get the camera out again.

Hmmm...
Some say "It looks like I'm not going to be able to get it out for a trial pitch before Monday though - we have guests staying this weekend."
Some say "As we have guests staying, it is the perfect opportunity to let them stay in the house whilst we sleep in the new tent in the garden"!

Enjoy!

While we're blessed with spare rooms, we're also cursed with a small garden so that's not an option .

I was hoping to use the local park for a test pitch.
