Middlewood Farm, Robin Hoods Bay - Manor Farm, Whitby - Upper Carr Touring Park, Pickering and not on the moors but only a short car ride away the C&CC site at Scarbourgh.
For me the best way to see the moors is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Catch the train in Pickering or any of the stops in between and visit Levisham, Newton Dale Holt, Goathland and Grosmont. Drive to Goathland (the set of Heartbeat) and spend a few hours in the 60's. Don't forget the seaside, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay.

Try Serenity Hinderwell, very close to Runswick bay, Staithes and Whitby not too far.
Its a good place to make base camp. Ditto the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - what bloke could resist steam trains?

North York Moors is a gorgeous area - enjoy!
I would echo Whitby/Robin Hoods Bay for the seaside. then there are some lovely little villages with good pubs such as Rosedale Abbey (we stayed at a campsite there we enjoyed but was quite busy and good for tents), Thornton-le-Dale and Hutton-le-Hole and you can find short walks from these villages into the countryside.
Small market towns such as Kirby Moorside, Helmsley and Pickering...
Sutton Bank is good for walking and the ancient White Horse, there's another abbey near there - Jervlaux, perhaps? (going inland and south rather that the higher, coastal bit).
Also the railway is fun as has been suggested!

We stayed here in November, if you don't mind being on a dairy farm. It's about 5 mile from Pickering. We are going in June, there is an area called the Hole of Horcum that we want to walk around.

We are out and about up there right now, West Ayton CC site is agood one for the area, not too remote either so theres the choice of plenty of shops should you need them just 6 miles away in Scarborough

Excellent day out - and a couple of pubs in the village that do food too.

My link went, Marfit head farm was where we stayed. Not too far from Whitby, beautiful place, great when goth weekends are on. Can vouch for Eden Camp, we enjoyed it. If you go to York, that is brilliant place, love going to the shambles and walking round the wall.

Travelling from Northants don't go via Sutton Bank (Thirsk) as you will not make it towing a Van. If you are heading towards Whitby then take the road from York to Malton to Pickering and then over the moors from that town with your van.
Fountains Abbey is just outside Ripon and Bolton Abbey is in Wharfedale...some way from North Yorks Moors...but well worth a visit. If you are going that way then Strid Wood CC site for Bolton Abbey. Boroughbridge CC site for Fountains could be a good base.
Would second all the recommendations of places to visit. Add in Dalby Forest (you do have to pay to go round). The train ride referred to above is through the Esk Valley - Heartbeat Country. Goathland is the setting for Aidensfield.
Better book for a month to take it all in!!!!!
Phil

We're going this weekend .. yeahhh!! CL outside Pickering, handy for the Moors and the Coast. Depending where you decide to stay (if you pick Whitby side might be too far) Hutton le Hole and Rydedale Folk Museum as previously mentioned, also Castle Howard is within easy striking distance. Rievaux Abbey, Helmsley lovely town and a visit to the Castle there very interesting (they give you headsets with a commentary). Eden Camp near Malton worth a visit.

NB further to Phil's comment, Caravans are actually prohibited on Sutton Bank, there is a caravan route round it. This is not apparent from the CC routefinder though, no mention of it!

Like to echo previous comments about the NYMR steam railway. Check their website for special events. You can book a return ticket from Pickering at the southern end of the line to Grosmont and get off the train - recommend Newtondale Halt go for a walk and then catch a later train. I actually find it particularly enjoyable to go for a walk and find a vantage point to take pictures of the rains. I recommend Darnholm near Goathland.
Great country pub with atmosphere at Beck Hole just up the road from Darnholm.
In the west Helmsley is a fine market town and Rievaux Abbey nearby is well worth a visit.
English Heritage organise re-enactments at Helmsley Castle, Scarborough Castle and Whitby Abbey. They do make these places come to life. The best I have seen was at Bylands Abbey which is a far less impressive ruin than Rievaux but of which i have the fondest memories because of a reenactment of the monastic life.

Thanks for all the suggestions of places to visit, we have made a note of those recommended,
what we are looking for now is a nice quite small rural site where we can relax enjoy the scenery, and escape from rush and bother for a couple of weeks
