I would say Brighouse bay also havent stayed at hoddom but been down a few times and looks ok you also have powfoot nice small campsite on beach and about 1/2 mile from hotel.Also nice small campsite at shawhead just outside dumfries (Barnsoul) lovely views with deer and red squirrel seen reguarly on site.

I stay in Dumfries so if you have any questions please feel free to ask if you have a certain area as Dumfries and Galloway is quite a big area and has loads of campsites from big holiday park to small family run ones.

Brighouse Bay would be my choice if I had children, big enough to keep them occupied but not big enough that it feels like a hi-de-hi holiday camp.  Beside a wee beach, coastal walks, small ponds to fish in, well equipped play park.  I would also look at Hoddom Castle in Ecclefeccan, and Castle Cary at Creetown.

We love D & G because, as Gerry says, it is a big place.  We used to think Perthshire was perfect but D & G has every it has plus fabulous a coast line, too.

Our favourite used to be Castlebay but, from what I can gather, the change of ownership didn't go so well and it may now be closed - if anyone knows any different, I'd be delighted to hear.  We're going to Port O' Spittal just outside Portpatrick in June so will check it out then.

We spent last year on a seasonal pitch at Glentrool Holiday Park, Bargrennan which is about 12 miles from Newton Stewart.  Loads of wonderful walks in the Galloway Forest, not far from Wigtown, Scotland's Book Town, and lots of other places to visit.  We don't have kids (I think I'm actually allergic to them  !!) but Glentrool does have a small play area.

Our most recent D & G outing is Barnsoul.  They have grass pitches with EHU's so should be able to accommodate a tent.  Can't say I noticed a play area but there are plenty of woods to explore and lots of wildlife to look out for.  Unless it's very busy, it looks like there would always be a decent open space for play.
