My wife got me a pressie of a new Trangia 27ul stove to use on my limited backpacking trips.
Its a few years since I have used a meths stove, used gas for many years.
My question is the age old debate about adding water to the meths which its claimed helps prevent sooting up the pans and burner but can reduce the efficiency.
I believe industrial meths which is purer does not soot up but I think you need a licence to buy this (like a painting business)..?
I think I am correct in saying the "purple" meths has an additive which was originally to stop people from drinking it.
Just wondered if things/thoughts have changed over the years in relation to the meths diluting.

yes you are right about diluting it on both points.
if you go to B&Q you can get bio ethanol from the fireplace section,it works out far cheaper and burns much cleaner.
and yes the additives are to stop people drinking it as it basically denatured alcohol, even mixed with cola i still find it too strong

Mmmm.. denatured alcohol with cola
can't be to bad as any alcohol with cola is ok in my book a dual purpose fuel..nice!!!

and for sooty pans, save your teabag after making a brew, gets the soot off a treat :)
personally i just use a handful of old leaves or grass but then again i'm hardly posh

I'm going to give the bio ethanol a go. I just like the idea that's it's cheaper! I'm still surprised that people find soot such a problem, as you can just rub it on the ground. I still like my Swedish Trangia, and I simply don't care that it's like carrying a house brick, it's the most reliable piece of equipment I own.
By the way, like my buddies, I prefer my meths straight

Was straight to B&Q to get some Bio Ethanol! Will give it a shot later today now it's stopped raining.
Job for today is to construct a windshield out of card, foil and double sided sellotape.. unfortunately I'm not on Blue Peter and don't have one I constructed earlier! lol
I have been using my Trangia stove for years using denatured alcohol for years never have I had a soot problem. The cleaner the fuel the cleaner the burn.
I don't find the soot a problem I too use grass to clean it. I always mean to add water but never seem to remember until I have lit the stove. My pan bottoms have a lovely colour to them now I wouldn't attempt to clean them
Well I reckon it burns better but then I'm no expert! Filled the small kettle I have with my Trangia-a-like set and it took 7 mins which was quicker than when I tried with meths a couple of weeks ago at 9 mins.
Bit of background to why I'm now posting here:
Working in Campbeltown (Mull of Kintyre) for the next year and thought I'd take the Outwell Oakland 3 man tent I have and try to get away one night a week instead of staying in the flat or hotel.
Dug out a Trangia clone (I believe) that's been in the attic for 15 years! Last time it saw service was my self and my wife Inter railing around Europe! I've used oodles of tomato sauce cleaning up the burner and wire wool cleaning the aluminium pans, looks almost new now!
Pic of the windshield to come, that just for my Coleman cartridge stove that was also dumped in the attic for 15 years!
I'm next looking for ideas for a windshield that doesn't cover the cartridge, seen some pics on the internet of some made from the foil baking trays so may give that a go.
