Hi all, I'm keeping an eye open for a CampingGaz Bluecat heater. I would like to buy one from a camping store rather than on-line. (I want to have a proper look first!) All our local stores seem to be waiting for stock. Has anyone noticed any in the major outlets?

I will be interested to hear any replies. 

I recently posted asking for comparisons between the Caming Gaz bluecat and Colemans blackcat put it got pulled for some reason.

They look very similar but I wondered if there was any difference.

Spotted the Bluecat Heater at my local Camping Shop in Southampton yesterday  and also Argos sell it. I have the Coleman Blackcat heater and they look virtually the same apart from the Bluecat heater looks to have a more rugged stand.

Mine works very well

Hello Adam

How long do you find the canisters last Adam, I think I read 6hrs on full.  Does that sound right?

Can the black cat take different size canisters?

My Blackcat heater only has one heat setting so I guess thats something the Bluecat has different. I always use the larger size cannisters and find they last about 4hrs.

There is also this heater that it claims can be used inside and outside

If I had the choice though I would go for the Mr Buddy Heater but its not officially sold in this country and I feel the gas cartridges will be hard to find.

Thanks for that Adam.  Not too good realy 4hrs.

I have seen those Mr Buddy (don't they have a way with words :) heaters, they do look good.

Cartridge compatiability is one of the important factors for me,  I don't want to start carrying yet another type.  The safety of the cat design being another one otherwise I would just get the old type that screw on top of a camping gaz bottle.

Blue cat is the same as Black cat and both will run for 6 hours on the larger cartridges. Blackcats will take the Coleman 500 cartridge or the coleman 250 cartridge.   Bluecat will take the CV range of cartridges  CV470, CV270 and CV300.

With both heaters stability will be ideal with the larger cartridge every time and therefore should be your first consideration when choosing cartridges. As noted above the main difference after cartridge type is indeed the stand supports. Blackcat wire stand / handle. Bluecat large heat resistant plastic legs / handles.

I saw them in GoOutdoors a couple of weeks ago.

got our blue cat from atlas leasure 25.99 we did have a black cat but it got recalled because of a fault. the stand seems a lot more substantial on the blue and easier to carry

I also have a BlackCat and am fairly pleased with it. It is sturdy and well built. I think there must be some different models that Coleman have produced as mine has an adjustable heat setting, although for all intents and purposes it needs to be on full, and I get about 8 hours per canister. I got mine from Go Outdoors last summer.

For those that aren’t aware, Coleman and Camping Gaz are both part of the same company, so I’d expect there not to be too much difference in the heaters in the grand scheme of things.

The real deciding factor in my opinion should be the canisters. You have more choice and availability with Camping Gaz has they are Europe based and go back donkeys’ years, as opposed to the American Coleman who are just moving into the European mass market. I believe the Coleman canisters will become more available in time. I prefer them to the Camping Gaz canisters, but there is not much of a real difference.

One final thing I should mention is to do with expectation. Don’t expect these things to kick out mass heat. They are designed with outdoor safety in mind and thus have no flame as such and give off a gentle heat that takes the chill away. It may be difficult, but the obvious thing to do is see one in action before you buy if you can.
