Hi everyone,

following the massive revamp of our camping kit this year we are finishing off with a trailer which we collect tomorrow. so can anyone recommend a wheel clamp or at least suggest roughly how much we should be looking to pay as I can honestly say I know less than nothing on the subject

Thanks Lisa

How is it being used, at home, on camp sites or while travelling and stopping at services etc. etc...?

I do not have one, and have not planned to buy one.

When I stop at services, I chain my trailer to the car using a heavy duty motorbike chain that is Thatcham rated.

While on camp sites, I do not normally chain it up, however, when I did, this is what it looked like:

Its going to be all locked up in the back garden behind gates and a mountain of stuff at home. I was thinking of something for when its on site really its funny but I hadn't considered just chaining it to a tree (said I knew nothing didn't I) I suppose it is just something to deter the "honest thief" as it where, after all if someone really wants it its probably gone. That said we all seem to be spending increasing sums of money on our camping kit and that is just left on site when we go out all day.

Had a look at these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW-HEAVY-DUTY-KEY-LOCK-CAR-CARAVAN-TRAILER-SECURITY-WHEEL-CLAMP-/351145803081?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item51c1ebbd49

which seem to sell well if nothing else any and all thoughts gratefully received though.

It isn't nearly as much fun as looking at tents and things though is it wheel clamps are just not very exciting

A bit of chain round a tree may stop the opportunist thief, but the guys that nick trailers will come prepared with a decent bolt cropper that will cut through the chain in less than 30 seconds.

Strange, that Trailer in your link, looks like a very expensive motorbike, far more nickable than a trailer worth about £100 when fenced!

Can't say were my case hardened 20mm chain and hardened box padlock came from, but the retail price would be £200 for the pair.

In fact the thief would probably be able to fence his bolt cutters for more than he would get for my Trailer lol.

We use an SAS Supaclamp Duo Gold wheel clamp and a chain similar to DK's, a decent hitchlock (can't remember the brand now ) and the trailer is also Data tagged.
We thought about getting one of the Bulldog Centaur wheel clamps but the weight and bulk put us off. The SAS clamp has a good Sold Secure rating too and seems more manageable.

Maybe overkill, but at least we know we have done as much as we can to deter a thief. Ours is a brand new Brenderup braked trailer so we paid quite a lot for it and want to keep it !

Get a bulldog wheel clamp and then when you mover over to the dark side and buy a caravan you can use it on that. We can all tell you are on the slippery slope, buying a trailer is the first symptom. 😉

Hmmm

this is something i hadn't considered.

2 strong men and you could pretty much lift the trailer into a van.

and i think i need to re think my design for the coach build to ensure the trailer does get nicked at the services.

That's what I was informed when I enquired about security equipment to purchase when I went to collect my trailer from Lichfield Trailer Centre, in that for a small trailer like my Brenderup 1150s, all it takes is two strong person and it can be lifted onto the back of a truck and driven away in no time, so don't bother with a wheel clamp.

The gentleman sold me a long padlock just over 10 GBP as a hitch lock, that was it, when I was standing in their reception area surrounded by all sorts of trailer security equipment!

I added the bike chain later so that I can chain the trailer to my car while stopping at motorway services for a break or an overnight stay.

I seldom secure my trailer on camp sites with security barriers.

I may add a Bulldog hitch lock at a later date, as it can be used when the trailer is hitched or unhitched, as my next car will have a detachable swan neck tow bar, and my bike chain will not work as it can now with my current car's tow bar.

hmm

might have to weld a stopper plate onto the single beam just behind the hitch and secure the trailer to the towbar with a chain.

guessing carbide quality is going to be required

Well we now have the trailer at least, at the back of the garden so lots of other stuff would have to be taken before anyone's getting it out reasonably secure for now I suspect. Looking at all the thoughts above I guess a good chain, padlock and tree are probably what we are looking at. Which is at least enough to deter the casual opportunist being as all chains seem to be relatively easily cut if your so inclined and a trailer can be lifted into a van with relative ease. Will just have to check if its covered by any of our existing insurance policies and if it is if they require anything special.

if you use a chain you could always get a motorbike ground ancour type thing.

can they really cut through carbide so easy?

i had a carbide lock on the shed i lost the key for and it wasn't that easy to get the lock off the door. Granted it was £40 for a padlock
