i'm looking at buying a new sleeping bag for our next hol at the beginning of september.  i currently'share' a double bag with my husband but he's just got a new air bed and i'm still on the floor with my lovely multimat!

anyway, what do you suggest?

i want a

square ended one - hate mummy bags

nice and roomy

no need for one of the hood things

fully unzippable

suitable for may to sept camping

willing to pay up to £30 (is that enough - ages since we bought our double for £15!)

We have a couple of these.

Not the prettiest but £21.50 (plus P&P) for 600g/m2. Very warm and also unzips completely if you want to use it as a duvet.

May I be cheeky and suggest looking at the Tesco rectangular sleeping bags? We've got a pair of these, (although we use them as singles when our son and DIL are using the rear double bed in our tin tent and we don't bother making up the humungous double in the front for ourselves), and while you may say that we can't possibly know if they'd be warm enough under canvas...trust me....they can and are, we're often trying to clamber out of ours when we use them inside the tin tent in only mild weather!

We got ours in place of a bad buy of two awful Mummy bags which we only suffered for one holiday and hated every minute of them and hubby couldn't even bear being inside his and just opened it as much as it would allow and laid it over the top of him with various body parts not being covered! Wasn't a nice view.

It might be worth giving Tesco a butchers? Sorry but I don't know what the weight of them is but they did say on the label that they're two season ones if that's any help.

If your wife is a cold sleeper she might need to think about a smaller bag rather than a larger one. Oversized bags (compared to body size) leave you trying to warm up cold air which is pretty tricky. A more compact bag might be better.

I too am looking for a sleeping bag. I bought one and found that I was so constricted, that I had to sleep with the zip open. The chest width was 78cm.

So, I now realise that I need something with a much more generous chest measurement to stop feeling claustrophobic. Anyone else had the same problem?

I don't mind the mummy in principal, so long as the chest gives me space. The Outwell Camper Lux seems a good choice (thanks Scrumble), but are there any other recomendations?

I'm a 6ft bloke, so need reasonable length, am using it under canvas, at least 3 seasons. Budget is not the limiting factor - it's finding a well made bag with enough chest room.

                      I have been using a SnugPak Merlin Softie 3 for the last 5 years, it is a great bag, packs real small, and my main use is when I go cycle touring, this year I treated myself to the "Expanda Panel", which is a zip in panel, and what a difference, feels like I am sleeping in a four poster now!.

That Snugpak expanda panel looks very good (other manufacturers should follow their lead), and I like the Snugpak range.  Vango seems to be a good name too.
