Hi . I'm thinking of buying Maplins Satellite in a suitcase to take caravaning at home and abroad. ( mainly because it is 12 volt powered)  Has anyone got one or knows anything about it, for or against.  Thanks Nigel.

We bought a complete system in a case off ebay, cost 80 quid including postage.

Turns out it was from Lidl, the one they were selling a few months back (we tried to get one at the time but they had sld out)  anyway, fair price still..

The site we have our van on has crap TV reception,

I went up on boxing day and took the system with me, I attached the dish to the jockey wheel, and it came with the digibox which went in the van.

you also get a sat compass, which attaches to the dish and you align it in a general fashoin using that.

I must admit though the exact lining up is time consuming, it has to be bang on to get reception, and at one point I nearly through the whole thing in the river!!  But just take your time move it mm by mm and you will get there.

In fact because it was so windy, I regulary had to re align it in the morning and it became very easy after a while,  one tip is to make sure you can see the TV through the window.

Once it was set up the picture quality is fantastic, and you get millions of channells!!

The only one down side is you dont get CH4 or CH5.

I am assuming thr maplins one is the same anyway, but if you want a link to the one i got off ebay let me know.

hope the above helps

We have had the maplins sat dish kit for over a year now, very pleased with it, cant get channel 4 or 5 on it but you get all the bbc and itv channels plus abot 500 other channels full of rubbish. We used it abroad, but if you go to far south you will need a bigger dish (same thing in Scotland) so we bought a sky zone 2 dish off ebay and a base of a rotary air dryer and had no problems getting a signal in the french alps (Annecy) My advice if you buy one is set it up at home use your sky dish, ours had defualt setting of a german sattelite and german text. You can reprogram it to astra 28 and english, and set out the channels how you want them, ie channel 1 on ours is bbc1 north west. As for aiming it at the right sattelite, its like riding a bike when you are a kid at first it seems impossible but practise makes it a lot easy, the dish will be almost vertical, get an accurate fix via a compass (aim just to the left of a distant tree etc.) and you will soon have that high pitched tone that says you got a pictures, if you have no picture behind the info panel on the tv you have hit the wrong satellite, but you are pointing roughly the right area. Another trick I learned is to twist the dish slighly for fine tuning, up down left or right, then you actually move the dish as required. Sounds a bit like hard work but i can mine up and running in less then 5 minutes easy. And if you are bored there are about 10 other sattelite you can go for, everything from italian/spanish football to arabic porn and everything in between!!!!!!!!!
