just when you think that you cant possibly buy anything else to add to your unendless collection of camping gear...along comes a ghillie kettle and looking at them on youtube i want one..im begining to morph into veruca salt ( i want it now daddy ) but have yet to try and persuade the wife of its advantages...so with a bit of persusion , sad eyes ...she may...just may let me buy it..oh my question was has anyone got one and are they any good..cheers..satewey

We have a Kelly's Kettle which I think is the same, or very similar.
It is excellent and we use it a lot on days out, holidays etc

My husband also takes it to work to use on site if there is no electric to make a coffee.

Would certainly recommend you buy one!

Obviously a MUST HAVE item, yes I DO have one.
For ease of lighting, I use a couple of sheets of screwed up kitchen roll, with a drop of meths sprinkled on to get it going.

My Son was looking at these, and the mkettle seems to be preferred to the kelly kettle.

They're great!! Boil water very quickly & great fun to use. I've 2 - a big un for when there's two of us & the smaller one for solo trips - you can use a Trangia burner in the small one if you're struggling for dry fuel. Don't bother with the 'cook sets' IMO - they're a waste of time.

Agreed

I LOVE my Kelly Kettle but the cook set is a waste of space

Good free fuel is pine cones - I have loads of bags in my garage !

Agreed - excellent piece of kit. It's unbelievable how fast it is with only the minimum of "fuel"

I made my own pot rest for on top, cost nothing as I already had some spare metal sheet, and took about five minutes to make. I have only used this to heat rice and soup, which it did with no problem. The bonus is that as you must have water in the kettle, I then use this, to make a cup of tea, and wash the pan.

love it. I use mine on the allotment every week. It takes a bit of practice but they are great for outside if it is windy or wet. I have saved the purchase cost by not using gas. You must use dry stuff or it will just smoke out the site. The best tinder for starting is Vaseline (they do small travel tin) rubbed into cotton wool, safer and easier to carry. Its really hard to find enough dry twigs in this country so I tend to cheat and take my own. Scrounge up left over bits of building timber and chop into pencil sized bits. Wrap in paper and stuff inside the kettle. You want lots of fast burn bits to get a good boil. I've "discovered" Heinz squeeze and stir soup for a quick hot snack. Way better than cup a soups.

I've always fancied one of these after seeing some Scout leaders using one. I got some money for Christmas so I think I might treat myself to one.

Just had a thought, would people with one already recommend the stainless steel or the aluminium one?

In hindsight, I wish that I had bought the stainless steel version. They are a bit more robust

My aluminium one is three years old with no signs of usage.(dents) I must admit I didn't know they made a s/steel version, or I may have bought one instead though.
The best tip I can give, is not to over load with sticks, as they will take longer to get going. It does not take much to boil the water, and I only use as much water as is required for one cup. (Billy no Mates) I now have it down to a fine art as to how much wood is required, as otherwise you will be left with wood burning after the water has already boiled. I also have the Swedish army version, but for some reason I prefer the Kelly Kettle
