We've just been on our first meet at Hardwick Parks - good to meet you all

However I was unable to get gas fridge to ignite, even after helpful advice from fellow campers. Any further help would be appreciated...

We recently bought the folding camper second hand, and were told that the 3-way fridge worked fine (Electrolux 4206). I have tried it on Mains since returning home, and it works fine then.

Symptoms:
Following instruction book, I have the gas turned on at the regulator, and at the shut-off inside the camper. I turn and press and keep pressed the gas thermostat knob, then press the piezoelectric igniter switch repeatedly. Checking the flame viewer I see no signs of spark or flame. However... here's the funny bit... if I then turn off the gas supply (eg by releasing the gas thermostat knob or turning off the shut-off) and continue pressing the igniter I do get a single yellow/orange spark/puff as the remaining gas ignites (but then goes out straight away as the gas supply is now turned off). The camper was level according to my spirit level, as the book says that too.

I will take a closer look at the back of the fridge in the next few days, but if there is anything else you can suggest it would be appreciated.

thanks

hubbyw

I  bought  a  3 way   cooler  the   other week  and  when  trying  it  out  i  could   not  get  the  gas  to  work,  so  i  phoned  up  shop  i  got  it  from  and  was  told  to  keep  gas  knob  pressed   down  for  at  least  20 seconds  before  pressing  igniter as  this  expelles  all  the  air  that  is  in   pipe.  After  doing  this  it  fired  up  ok.

We  have  a  combicool,   on  the back of  these  there   is  a  small  hole (bottom  right corner) which  you  can  light  with  a  match  if  it  will  not  light  with  igniter.   Have  you  tried  lighting  it  this  way.

Have you tried taking it out and turning it upside down, my Dad did this with his caravan fridge and it worked.

> Have you tried taking it out and turning it upside down <

This won't work for an ignition problem. Turning upside down may help for a circulation problem, vapourbubbles being stuck somewhere in the system. By turning it upside down the bubbles mmay go the othet way and clear the system.

In the case of OP the igniton does not work, either due to lack of sparks (dirty? e.g. soot or dust, wich makes contact thereby preventing the sparks etc), or because the gas is not there or does not ignite. Probably because it is not there. Sometimes it takes a few minutes before the air is out of the system, formally a few seconds, in practice longer. I usually open the shut-off on arrival than doe the rest (steadies, levelling), and after that ignite the fridge or heater. This way works. Somehow the gas gets into the pipes better or the air gets out or gets well mixed with the gas. Anyway this always works, while it never works if I try immediately.
If the burner is dirty, it will also faulter. Cleaning may well help.
By-effect may be that dirt also attracts damp, wich again conducts, making the sparking more difficult.

Servicing in most cases means cleaning and that may be all. The advantage is that the technician is capable of checking for faulty parts, wich is more difficult for most private persons. Moreover it is a gassystem with clear safety-aspects.

The thermo couple was playing up on mine a couple of weeks ago & it gave a different problem - it sparked & the gas lighted but no matter how long I held the knob in the gas went out as soon as I let it go.

Salop caravans will service it but I have found them pricey.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.

Your problem is an obstruction in the gas supply at the pilot, a common fault. It's one of two things. Dirt partially blocking the pilot burner jet itself. Or, the air intake holes blocked. You need to get to the back of the fridge. At the bottom right hand side is the pilot assy. running across the bottom is a thin 6mm copper gas pipe that takes the gas to the pilot. Just before the pipe gets to the pilot assy it runs into a small rectangular metal box section. This box is the air to gas mixer, as the gas passes through the box section it draws air in and mixes with the gas for correct burning. This box section has two small holes in it, one at the front and one at the back, the holes are very small, no bigger than the diameter of a matchstick. These need to be cleaned, and also the pilot burner itself. You can do this quite easily by blowing it out with air pressure. I use one of those 12 volt compressors for blowing tyres up. Giving it all a good blow out should solve your problem. You can test it works ok by lighting the pilot manually from the back. I seem to think your problem is more likley a blockage in the air vents rather than the pilot assy. The reason for this is when you say you had a puff of ignition after turning off indicates it only lit briefly because air had, had time to mix with stray gas. Contrary to belief, pure gas is difficult to ignite without air, perfect ignition occurs when the gas and air is mixed on a 50/50 basis. Try what I have told you and I am sure you will solve the problem. If you require any further info let me know. Johno.

thank you johnho, cleaned the box section holes and blew it out with pump as suggested - first attempt gave me partial success, but after second cleaning and blowing it ignites every time - thanks very much
