I'm compiling my want list, so spending a lot of time in this forum - hopefully I will be able to get most things I fancy over the winter months!
So my thoughts are on SIMs now. And what I'm wondering is, does anyone other than Thermarest make a shorter mat, while still retaining lots of comfort? As a 5'5" woman and a child, we really don't need 6' long mats, and would appreciate the space saving, but I'm not sure I can afford Thermarest prices really.
I know Floggitt, it's OK, I appreciate the advice and I did indeed turn up a wealth of information.
My next question is this - a couple of mentions here for Multimat, yet I've never seen them mentioned before! Are they a good known brand? Being quite thin mats, are they going to offer a good degree of comfort? I had some SIMs before but could really feel the hard ground through them - I am confident that the right mat will be excellent but less confident of my abilty to find the right mat!
I am thinking the same thing and listing kit for next year.
Vango do a 'trek' SIM which is available in 'compact' 160cm long. Most brands 'small or 3/4 mats tend to be only 120cm long.
I recently got 2 Highlander 160 cm mats for my boy and myself. I am about 5'4 and the entire length of my body fit on the mat. It was the perfect length. Unfortunately the label had a misprint and rather than 5cm they were 2.5 cm thick. My back needed more padding so they went back to the shop. It was a shame, as the mats themselves were really lovely and packed small.
I agree that smalls and smaller girlies are well suited to shorter mats. I want to go backpacking next year so am looking for a shorter, yet thicker, lighter mat
Just noticed that the Outwell kids dinosaur and flowers SIM are the 160cm ones, and only cost about £13!!! I wonder what season rating they have, if they'd be ok in a bit of frost, i'll have 2!
Hi moon, my problem is the opposite - I'm after a full-length SIM.
When I buy one, my nearly-new 'shortie' SIM will be looking for a good home. It's a Eurohike Trtek Compact, measures 120cm (48 inches) by 50cm (20 inches) and is 40mm thick when inflated. It weighs just under 1kg in its bag.
It's virtually unused (it was an impulse bargain buy in a sale).
Even at a petite 5'4" your feet would hang off the end but if you're interested, drop me a note here or by email.
Have you looked at the Alpkit Range? My daughters 7.5cm Dozer packs down as small or smaller than my 5cm Thermarest Basecamp, and the 5cm Dirtbag goes even smaller, without being shorter.
As someone else said, the 3/4 mats are only about 120cm long, which is just under 4', and my children became disatisfied with them at an early age!
