Please help, just come back from a fab time in France but the ground was really stony/rocky and OH had a few arguements with the tent pegs and he won - does anyone know of some tent pegs that can cope.
Hope I didn't sound abrupt, we all have to learn, 12 or so months ago I didn't know what they were either. And I will be the 1st to admit I probably have a lot to still learn
Ahh thanks guys, nice to know I am not the only one - we are still newbies really, we went to France last year for our first camping trip and made a list of the things that we needed for another trip - lost it! and made another list this year - which I have now put on the computer so I cant lose it!! Rock Pegs were No 1 on the list and will be bought soonish ready for the summer camping trip.Dont worry about sounding abrupt - you didnt, I just felt stoopid!
I have a couple of boxes of the blue diamond hard ground pags that i bought for use on a site in the cotswolds that has a lot of cotswold stone in the field and the first time i stayed there i mullered most of my pegs
I use a claw hammer to bang them in and pull them out

That's a nice looking campsite you found Steviem. Are you going to write a review?

You've absolutely no cause to feel thick, Sooz. Answering questions is what UKCS forums is all about and no-one should be ashamed about learning new things.
There are two common types of rock peg on sale in camping shops. One is smooth with an anodised ('petrol coloured') finish and a plastic top to hook the guylines to (see the link in Force Ten's post above). The other type is like a six-inch nail with a short bar welded near the top to make a cross shape. They both penetrate stony ground in my experience although the 'six inch nail' type will bend if you really give them some wellie with a lump hammer.
I recently visited Great Langdale NT campsite in Cumbria. The ground there is very stony - so stony in fact that it defeated the tips of my substantial angle-section steel storm pegs. That meant I used up all my stainless steel pegs (which are very strong indeed) so I had to buy some extra rockpegs from the campsite shop.
Campsite shops are usually quite expensive in comparison to places like GO Outdoors or online retailers so I was pleasantly surprised to pay £3 for a pack of six rockpegs (50p per peg).
The moral is clear - always carry more rockpegs than you think you'll need. Also, you would be well advised to carry a metal-headed hammer (either a lump hammer or an ordinary claw hammer) to drive in rockpegs rather than struggle with a rubber mallet.
I just bought some admittedly quite cheap Hi Gear rock pegs from go outdoors last week and i'm a bit miffed about the fact that a lot of them bent really badly across the plastic tops when i was removing them from the ground. I am not sure they will come out next time without the plastic top snapping.
Is this typical or should i take them back for an exchange or refund?
------------- Manor Park Farm, Cromer every august, but somewhere different every may/June.
4 years of superior packing yet still no room in the car
We bought two lots - some had green tops and were the same shape as the yellow ones in the link above. The nails are fine, but the green tops bent and snapped very quickly. The black ones were a different shape, same shape as these and they are brilliant, the plastic tops are tough and they can be pulled out with a normal peg puller.
