not sure how much water it holds, but i forgot our kettle when we went away last week, and as we were doing our shopping i remembered, so bought the Asda £4 one as far as i could tell, i didnt notice any after taste from it. and it does have a whistle although sometimes temperametal, but i figured what did i want for the price, i never leave it unattended whilst on anyways.
We use a quest whistling kettle (available from most camping shops) & it brews a lovely cuppa Ours has a fold-down handle, so it's easier to pack, but beware Quest also do whistling kettles with fixed handles too, not so easy to pack.
I like a whistling kettle, but OH can't hear it so we don't have one now (use Trangia stove). It is easier to make a cuppa early morning without worrying about the whistle waking folks up!!!
we have an ordinary stainless steel one ,we have gone through many aluminium ones over the years ,we always camp by the sea so the salty atmosphere eats away at the ali at the seams.
modern ones are so thin walking past with a bag of chips will ruin them i expect
ours has the advantage its a push up whistle (so you dont wake the neighbours) and has a top filling hole as well so you can see how much is in it unlike the spout filler ones
probably the taste is from the water rather than the kettle we use a jug filter as the norm as our drinking water at home is filtered and we notice "foreign" water immediately
often the clorine in the water reacts with the metal making minging tea but if you can let water sit for 24hrs before using then it doesnt happen (this does work as we tried it after being advised by the severn trent man that was checking the water leak out front of the house)
I have one from Millets. Bought a few years ago but i think there were 2 sizes. The handle folds down, boils enough for at least a couple of mugs, doesn't wobble & doesn't drip when poored. Oh and it fits in the van sink cos that's where it has to live. Perfect!
Hi there and thanks for the suggestions and er comments!
I don't tend to use a water carrier and I have the same problem using water straight from the tap at home (I've carried out some extensive tests in my home lab aka kitchen). Interesting about leaving the water to sit - would you have to have two water tanks on the go though??!!!
I may search out the Quest kettle Jean recommends or check out our local Millets (a non-drippy kettle is also worth packing space). If all else fails I'll use the electric one when we have EHU - but it's just not the same.
