Looking for a reasonably priced decent windbreak. Looking for something that will provide a bit of privacy round the side of the tent so would like one with reasonable height and length. Basically want it to go round the side of the tent and provide an outdoor eating area. - Blue preferably - know its anal but like one to match the Vango "true navy" of our tigris but not that essential as long as its not going to clash horribly!!

Any suggestions or links to reasonably priced ones please?

Thanks all for the help!

Hi Stubb-z

Define "reasonably priced"

Cheapest are the beach type stripey ones. Might not match too well, but wooden poles mean need for guying is reduced/eliminated (in good weather)

Dearer, still stripey, but do a blue, are the Blue Diamond type. Wood poled again so same guying advantage, tho' we always guyed ours, and had a few poles snap. You can get replacements tho'.

Dearest, but best match, are the alloy poled tent maker windbreaks. Always need guying. Some hate 'em, some love 'em.

Yer pays yer money etc

Here's a Vango in "True Navy", only list a 4 pole, so won't go far, £39.95:

Vango

Sounds like a 6 poler would suit better, but Amo want £56 plus delivery on the green

I'd google round.

Cheers Mike - Reaonably priced might not have been the best choice of words!
We are not  not a "money no object" family but appreciate you get what you pay for etc!

Think we are looking along the lines of, the alloy pole type, but the big Vango ones seem to be about 60+ quid which I think is a bit expensive for what it actually is. Just wondered if anyone had spotted any alloy type bargain anywhere - or had any advice on ones to definately steer clear of!

We're not "money no object" either, but the beach type would just aesthetically annoy, so we've never had them.

Have had both the Blue Diamond and tent type, and they each have their pros and cons. The BD's take up a lot of room in the car, especially the 7 polers, and despite what the fans will tell you, they can still blow down, snap poles, and leave the metal tips in the ground.

We're currently on the tent type, and our Vango 4 pole one has worked well with our Orchy.

We've got an Outwell in the polycotton for our BL, and here we intend to set it up at the canopy end as this owner did (with apologies to the ebay seller concerned, but the pic illustrates the point well) and tie it in to the poles, thereby minimising guying near the tent. We'll then run it forward one panel, then in at an angle.

I think the owner folded one panel back. It's a 4 pole, 3 panel windbreak, so we'll roll up the first panel so that the first two poles match the tent and canopy poles, on whichever side we put it (depending on the pitch) then have one full panel out, then one panel in.

The idea is that weather depending, we can have kitchen stuff outside with minimal guying in the immediate area. It'll loose some canopy floorspace, but will be worth it for us.

We got the Outwell one on either a price match or % off deal and that may be a way forward, or do as I do and set up a search on ebay for the specific thing you want. I get daily emails that way.

Good luck.

Stubb-z,
Just be aware that most are around the 1.4m height... those vango ones (steel poled/guyed) are 1.65.

Another thing to bear in mind is.... do you REALLY want one?

When we set up last year, we had this....

Protection and, like you say... privacy.
We loved it. Our dream set up. Got everything right first time!!.... WRONG!

We couldn't see anything!!
We couldn't see what the commotion was, when the ducks started squabbling.
We couldn't see little Jemima giving little Johnny a swift kick on the shins.
We couldn't see whether our neighbours were wearing crocs,or mock-crocs-with-socs.
We couldn't see the transition of the new arrivals descend from lovey-doves to D.I.V.O.R.C.E.E's in the time it takes to say "Could you pass me the mallet please, sweetheart?"
And worst of all... we couldn't see what other tents and equipment other folk had. Which means,of course, you can't then see what you NEED to get for yourselves!

It's been up twice... our first two trips.

I'm now on the look out for a small, (3 pole max) polycotton number, pref beige/brown/cream, that would only go up if we really had to....to protect the cooker/kitchen. But in reality, would hardly ever go up... hence the reason I am in no rush, and will only buy something that is actually perfect for that scenario, and our newer, nicer, (imo) set up.

We now sit out in the open, weather permitting, smiling and waving at folk, raising a glass/mug to passers by, and generally having a bloody good old nosey!! We don't care about privacy, we care about feeling "a part of the community".

We have walls at home. We don't want to put them up when camping, too!
In our opinion, we made a mistake, with that particular set up, above!

Mucker

got me a cheapy beach type one which is fine......

but it don't fit in the car too well, too long for the parcel shelf and the trailer(unless strapped on top) so has to lie down the middle!

so keep meaning to upgrade to a alloy type but they are not too cheap really.

Just got one of these, no ropes all over the place to trip over. With the guy ropes from the tent and the ones from a windbreak you may find the close area a little threaded, and a little hard to navigate in poor light.

These are the good old bang in the ground sort but with quality build. The one linked is 7 poles and around 18 foot long. He windbreak is a nice height to cook and shelter behind, we are looking forward to our first camp with it.  Oh and it under £40 !

You're not wrong, mon ami!

It's really rather embarrassing now, but we were learning, when all said and done!

And hey, if admitting our mistakes on here helps at least one person sit back and think, then that's good enough for me!!

I'm with mucker on this one! Much rather sit in the open and be sociable / nosey. Our's only goes up if the wind makes cooking difficult.

With my previous tent, a Khyam Freelander, I would use a Khyam 4-pole canopy windbreak.

For my current tent, the Hypercamp Escala 4, I splashed out on a ivy/hedge pattern 5-pole Blue Diamond windbreak, as the Khyam windbreak does not look right with the retro look of the tent.

I've got one of the alloy poled guy rope types like this, paid about £30 for it and it's a pain in the bum putting in pegs for all the guys and to be honest it's not that great in the wind. So when in Devon last year, I bought one similar to thesefor about £8 from a beach side shop. Guess which one I use most?

we have two windbreaks (stone wall design) and they curve around to form a semi enclosed area in front of our tent...we leave a gap in the front so that we can peek out at what's going on around us, but still enjoy the benefit of having a nice draught free zone to relax and bbq in...
