Which must have been asked before. We are thinking of going for about 3 months from November. Need to know how easy it is to tour about (we don't like staying in one place for any length of time), gas bottles, presciption medication, size of satellite dish for southern Spain and what to take apart from the obvious. Routes, as we will probably take Norfolk Line to Dunkerque, unless I can persuade OH to use the tunnel, the idea being to get round Paris without using tolls, or as little as possible. Probably via Benidorm area and down to the south. Would we need to pre-book sites? If there is somewhere with all the info, can somebody let me know please?

Anne

In answer to your questions :-

(1Prescriptions ,I had to ask my Doctor for 3 months supply

(2)Gas , I bought a pigtail and Spanish adapter for €25
and a full CEPSA stainless steel gas bottle for €32 which is mine to keep and I bring a full one home to the UK each year , an exchange is only €13 for 11kg gas .

(3)Booking site's in advance ? No there are plenty to choose from on the Costa's so you will always get in somewhere , Although some of the very popular sites do get full up so if there is a particular site that is a MUST then pre-booking might be an option .

(4) Satellite Dish , if you want BBC1 then you need a 1.3 meter dish minimum if just SKY subscription channels , channel 5 and ITV1 then an 85cm even down in La Manga will do although the only ITV1 regions that can be received on a smaller dish are ITV1 Central & ITV1 Central South which both transmit on the South Beam .

(5)Calais A16 to Boulogne then leave at junc.29 , Follow
N1 toll free to Abbeville , then A28 toll free to Rouen
On arriving in Rouen take the N15 along the banks of the Seine River to Pont-de-L,Arche then A154 /N154 towards Evreux , N12 towards Dreux then N154 to Chartres , N123 around bypassing Chartres and rejoin N154 to Orleans and join the N20 for a short while , head East on the N60 towards Chateauneuf . D952 towards Gien and join A77 towards Nevers , then N7 to Moulins then N79 and N9 toward Gannat , A179 and join A71 for Clermont Ferrand and on A75 towards Millau which there is toll for the Bridge eventually joining the A9 at Beziers which is a Toll motorway to the Spanish Border .
The above route is virtually toll free apart from the Millau Bridge and the A9 section

Thanks, where did you buy the gas supplies? plus OH wants the Sky channels for football mainly. We have a Maxview 66cm dish now so assume we would need a bigger one? What is the typical cost for sites? It looks as if we won't be able to get an ACSI card, which run from January-December in any case, and Camping Cheque sites seem to be in short supply.

Ann I bought my bottle at La Manga but most site will rent you a bottle with a refundable surcharge , you just pay for the gas .
You may pick an empty bottle up at the local fleemarkets where they often sell empty €5 .
An ACSI card would be advantageous however you should get some site's doing pitches for 15-20 € per night often if you stay for 2-3 weeks the rate drops .
Your 66cm Maxview dish will pick up the South beam no problem even down near La Manga and beyond , I saw folks using that size of dish with fairly good results you just need to re-tune your SKY BOX to the South beam and it will work .
Not hard to do just look at www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk and it explains how to do it

If your looking for somewhere nice to stay you might want to try Camping Cabopino between Marbella and Malaga, if you stay for more than 30 days it works out to 13.33 euros. Very nice site has a resurante and a bar two swiming pool one indoor one out. Lost of English Dutch and the odd German  just messing there all ok?

It is right on the coast road and 5 mins walking to the beach, right now the weather is about 20 deg most days.

We are planning to drive from Northumberland to Benidorm next March. 3000 miles round trip. Six weeks. Five to six days each way and about four weeks at Benidorm.  I have planned a route using some toll roads (approx. £90 x 2)

Dunkirk or Calais to Boulogne / Abbeyville / Rouen / Evreux / Dreux / Chartres / Tours / Potiers / Angouleme / Bordeaux / Hendaye / Pamplona /Sarragossa / Valencia / Benidorm. I will have a look at the route above. Do you get stuck in traffic? How far do you get each day on that route and where did you stop overnight? I would love not paying tolls.

The campsites I have found open in March on route are.                                  Parc de Loisirs le Val Fleuri Chateaudun                         Camping Larrouleta Urrugne                                           Camping Sainte Claire, Neufchatel                                          Les bords de l’Eure Chartres                                            Campsite Au Coeur du Vendôme

I would be grateful for opinions of previous travellers on the route and any stopovers please.

Fred.

Have you seen the website Campsites near the Main Routes which gives details of ALL campsites within 15km of the major routes through Europe.  Those in red are sites which are open all year.  Sites are listed geographically, from North to South, or from East to West along a route, so it's easy to locate where they are.  Check with open all year sites, though, as European site opening dates are not always as fixed, or as reliable, as you might think!

Don't forget to buy health insurance. I know a lot of people rely on the EHIC card. It doesn't cover for everything.

Hi Frederico,

We done the trip to Benidorm this year on the same route you are planning. We done four stops on the way down. Calais, Tours, Bayonne and the last one at Navajas in Spain. We arrived at El Raco about 12.00am. 1400 miles from home to the site.

We hit a huge hail storm on the way down just south of Zarragossa. Hail stones like golf balls. New side required on both vans! Never mind it did'nt spoil the holiday.

We had the ferry back rom Santander to Plymouth for £500. We intend doing the same again next year but will take the ferry instead. Taking into account tolls ,fuel, crossing, site fees and wear and tear on the car there is not much in it. £1019 return Portsmouth to Bilbao.

Had a great time and can't wait to go back.

Gareth
