Driving downto Dover from the midlands Thursday lunchtime. Choice of M1 and clockwise round M25 or M40 and anti clockwise. Has anyone got up to date info on road works etc to help us decide which way to go?

Thanks

Dave

If I was you, I'd go M6 to the M1 and at the Catthorpe interchange take the A14 right the way across to the M11 at Cambridge then the M11 to the M25 and go clockwise via the Dartford Crossing picking up the M20 to Dover at junction 3 of the M25.

This route keeps you on the M25 for the minimum amount of distance and time. You might find the traffic a bit lumpy on the A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge but it's certainly no worse than the M25 at that time of the day.

Good luck,

Vic

M40 is much better than M1 any day - have never yet had delays on it until into London whereas M1 delays are assured at Luton and M25 junction (in my experience!).

I think anticlockwise on M25 is shorter, avoids the bridge/tunnel at Dartmouth and avoids the two-year works delays on the M25 in NE London/Essex. The M25 is, by definition, Hell but I think it will not feel so bad if you go anti-clockwise. It's the route we'll be taking!  Good luck .....

Leave it as late as you can to check - http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/18111.aspx

or other sites but note that delays in the north-east segment, clockwise, are more or less permanent  17

That's leaving you with 50% of the M25 to negotiate whether you go clockwise or anti-clock.

I've suggested an option which leaves you with about 25 miles of the M25 to travel. Going on the M40 will leave you with about 60 miles in either direction and going ant-clock will take you smack through the Heathrow bit which is one of the worst bits of the entire M25. Going clockwise will set you on course for the Chorleywood roadworks which also spells trouble.

I'd strongly recommend you think on..........I live with the M25 on an almost daily basis.

Vic

Yes, Heathrow stretch is sometimes bad but seldom grinds to a halt and is not too bad off-peak ..... but there's a lot of luck in all these things!

No mention of what time of day you're travelling - if very early or late then I'd go straight through London and forget the M25 altogether.

Thanks Vic, I'm gonna go that way this Friday. I came back along the M11 last year and it was a lot quieter.

From Keele services (j16-15) M6 to Dover docks it is 25 miles further down the M40 than M6,M1.

To be honest it really is a case of 6 and 2 threes which ever way you go they all have their little places where they have big queues.

Hi,

We are travelling from Mid wales to Dover on Saturday morning and would like to arrive in Dover for about midday. Can anyone advise on most likley best route?? I know bit of a loaded question, but we live in the North of Scotland and we don't have BIG roads up here, lol.

We are detouring via friends in FourCrosses, Wales for 1 night to break our journey and we plan to leave Wales about 7am, will this be early enough?

We also have a TomTom GO730 with IQ routes with but haven't paid for the latest traffic updates, Would it be a worthwhile thing to do? I've spent some time this afternoon looking at all the roadworks sites and it seems that they are everywhere!

Any advice welcome,

Thanks

Donna

If it's the Four Crosses here then personally back up into Shrewsbury A5 M54 M6 M1 M25 M20 Dover.

If you are not towing then a 7am departure for a midday arrival won't be far wrong if towing then add an hour on.

I was going to go on Friday and drive from Cheshire to Dover and get the ferry across at 3.15pm. But ive decided to go a day early and stay overnight at the CC site in Maidstone. I'm not confident doing it all in the one day for an afternoon crossing.
