Now I do appreciate that there will be problems from buzzing things but does anyone have any reccomends or things to avoid / watch out for in this area?

This is for 2009 - nothing like planning ahead

The old walled town of Aigues Mortes is good. If you do a topic search for Camargue, you'll find the question  I posted in July with the usual comprehensive answer from Val.

We're off there next May......if the weather is obliging. Places to visit on our list include (and not all in the Camargue, obviously, but within reach for the day) Nimes -Roman arena and stuff, Pont Du Gard -Roman viaduct, Aigues-Mortes -Medieval fortified town, Les Baux De Provence -medieval town, Le Grau du Roi - beach.

If you google "camargue tourisme" ...or Nimes tourisme, Languedoc Rousillon tourisme etc, it brings you to the local tourist office, most have English pages and you can order brochures/leaflets for local attractions. We have been doing it for the last few weeks and have had oodles of stuff through the post now. Some is in french, but easily understandable.

Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is an modern resort with an interesting fortified church untouched by all the modern developments of the town. There are good beaches and guarded car parking near the harbour. We were there in July and we took a boat trip along the Petite Rhône where we saw lots of bird life, white horses and bulls.

It's a place to be avoided at weekends, however, the first time we went there we couldn't get parked and we thought it looked far too busy for our liking, but this year it was fine on a Thursday in the first week in July. We parked with no problems and got on the first boat we looked at. Do be careful where you park though as we know two people who have had their cars broken into in the area, one in Sts-Maries and one in Aigues- Mortes, which is another place I would recommend.
