We still havent got breakdown cover sorted and we go to France 3 weeks on Thursday so really need to get this done in next week or so. I have done quote online with travelcoverquote.com who quote about £32 for 2 weeks cover through AXA or I have spoken to lady from ADAC who quoted £98 for the year. We dont really need the year as I have cover through bank ac (doesnt cover my 12 year old car though abroad!) The thing is I cant read through anything from ADAC to see what they cover me for so I cant compare. The lady I spoke to had a cold so I couldnt understand very well. Can anybody tell me main points. We will have a trailer. I know the AXA one will not insure trailer if it is not attached at time of breakdown. Thanks in adavance.

Not quite as simple as that. If you breakdown locally while you trailer is at campsite you will get towed to the local garage. If they can offer a repair in a reasonable time your car will not be transported home, you don't get a choice between recovery home & local repair in all circumstances. If local garage offers, for example to fit new gearbox for £3k next day then you won't get your car taken home so you can fit a secondhand gearbox yourself for £200.

The only way you would definitely get transported home is if you broke down on the way to catch your ferry & then trailer would be attached so no prob.

Am I being stupid by asking how a trailer breaks down when it's not attached to a car and therefore stationary? We've had a gas regulator go on site but I can't see any breakdown service coming out to fix that. Would there be anything so serious as to stop you hitching it up and driving 500 yards down the road before you phone the breakdown service anyway?

Nothing to do with the trailer, even if that breaks down, ie, failed wheel bearing or gets hit & smashed but car is undamaged then most breakdown insurances won't recover or repatriate trailer on its own. What the op mean't was if car broke down on the road while trailer was parked at campsite would trailer still be repatriated with car? The answer might be, possibly, but if car could be repaired locally in a reasonable time then neither would car be repatriated.

I think I see.  Faile wheel bearing and other such failures do with motion, well you wouldn't know unless you were towing would you, so the car would be attached.  A smash, my FC insurance covers me for that and I guess, so would anyone else's. I see what you mean by the car breaks down though, mmm, I wonder?

Yes, I think in event of accident it is up to your car or trailer/caravan insurance to organize recovery not breakdown insurance. I doubt they would repatriate a vehicle or caravan etc of very little value tho, it would be cheaper to scrap it in France & pay out rather than recover back to UK.

I guess if trailer or caravan was not insured separately then it would not be recovered if car was not damaged. What would happen if car was written off & deemed not worth taking back to UK if it was towing a caravan at the time, I don't know, one would hope that in that case caravan would be repatriated as car could not be fixed. Certainly a minefield.

It's all these kinds of questions and possible outcomes that's making me think it's just safer to opt for Red Pennant again. I know it's pricey, but it's also peace of mind. Our car is old and worth far less that our caravan, so the chances of it  (car) being repatriated after a  breakdown are quite low, since many policies will only repatriate a car if the cost of doing so is less than the market value. Added to that, a lot of insurers will only repatriate a caravan if it was attached to the car at the time of the incident/ breakdown. Most will not guarantee getting you a hire car with a tow bar either, which could leave you completely stranded! I don't think some of the policies are worth the paper they're written on when it comes to caravans.

I'm inclined to agree with you Argente, there just seems to be something about Red Pennant that gives that extra peace of mind. After all, if the Caravan Club haven't got it sussed, then who has? yeah, I may save £50 elsewhere but if I'm stuck with the wife and 2 kids in tow, I want to know I'm in good hands. That's not jut worth the extra £50, it' priceless.

The problem is that for some of us, it doesn't just save £50 going with ADAC.  We have multi-trip, any length trip, with ADAC, plus breakdown cover in the UK for a year.  That costs us just over £70.00 at today's Euro exchange rate!!!  We have health insurance which costs about £80.00 - and covers our pre-existing conditions. That's a total of £150.00 - we don't need anything else on top

If we took out Red Pennant for Personal and motoring cover the costs for 'basic' cover for annual, multi-trip, any length trip would have cost us £274.00 and £368.00 for 'Plus' (and those are 2011 prices - I can't find this year's on line but know they've gone up)  In addition we'd need Green Flag, or similar, for home cover and our quote for that would be £62.54. We'd also need 'Top Up' health insurance as Red Pennant won't cover our existing conditions.  It's impossible to find out what this would be, quickly, as it's such a complicated subject and usually involves long phone calls! So we could at least £186.50 and much more £280.00 depending on the top up cover costs!!  That's a LOT of money!

I think people's circumstances, too, affect their decision.  We're retired, meander, and this is not our 'one and only' holiday.  If it happened to be 'curtailed' due to problems, then we'd probably just go home and go again later in the year.  We aren't particularly bothered about 'continuation cover' and have two strapping sons, who if the caravan were left behind, would just go over and recover it for us.  Those who have children, when this is their only holiday and they can't just rearrange, perhaps need the Red Pennant 'Full Monty' much more than we do.

Can anyone tell me whether you can join ADAC over the internet or by phone? If so has anyone a phone number - I know I have seen one somewhere, but can't fnd it now I desperately need it.
We go away on Thursday and need to sort this out asap.
Thanks
