I would like to know how they do it. As they were on a motorway rest area I assume they would be running their fridge on gas so would not pumping gas into a place where there was a pilot light not likely to set the whole place on fire? Also with the suggested volume of gas how come the perpetrators were not overcome? Gassing is always regarded as an urban myth as none of the victims ever go to hospital to have any tests.

I am sorry but Eastern Europeans with that much knowledge about how to render someone unconscious without causing lasting damage could earn far more working for the NHS as an anaesthetist, - These stories just add up.

As it was in the Daily Heil, as true as the long-range weather forecast from the Daily Express, or the 49 foods which give you, or cure, cancer. This week. It's a dangerous place, Annabel! Full of Johnny Foreigners! And to cap it all, they don't serve spotted dick!

Looks as if someone's stolen the cedilla from DM's keyboard as well - the place is called Lançon-Provence or Lançon-de-Provence.   If they can't be bothered to check even the spelling of the location what hope is there for accuracy in the rest of the story?

Generally it's not possible to find 'source' stories of these robberies, but in this case a simple 'google' comes up with stories going back to 2011 of robberies from motorhomes in this area - usually blamed on East Europeans, no gas mentioned.  It does go on to say just how vulnerable motorhomes are.

It's obvious that they were robbed, unlikely or impossible that gas was used - with even the story in the Daily Mail quoting an anaesthetist stating that a tanker load of gas would be required.

I think we all tend to forget that these are sneak thieves 'skilled' in their 'job' and good at getting in and out as quietly as possible - and also just how soundly we can sleep when it's warm, we're tired, have had a few glasses of wine.  I can certainly sleep for England when we're in the caravan.

This "gassing" thing again? But it is in the Daily Hate so there's really no hope. They seem to wheel the same story out every year.

A statement from The Royal College of Anaesthetists about Motorhome owners being gassed then robbed.

Despite the increasing numbers of reports of people being gassed in motor-homes or commercial trucks in France, and the warning put out by the Foreign Office for travellers to be aware of this danger, this College remains of the view that this is a myth.
It is the view of the College that it would not be possible to render someone unconscious by blowing ether, chloroform or any of the currently used volatile anaesthetic agents, through the window of a motor-home without their knowledge, even if they were sleeping at the time.
Ether is an extremely pungent agent and a relatively weak anaesthetic by modern standards and has a very irritant affect on the air passages, causing coughing and sometimes vomiting. It takes some time to reach unconsciousness, even if given by direct application to the face on a cloth, and the concentration needed by some sort of spray administered directly into a room would be enormous. The smell hangs around for days and would be obvious to anyone the next day. Even the more powerful modern volatile agents would need to be delivered in tanker loads of carrier gas or by a large compressor.
Potential agents, such as the one used by the Russians in the Moscow siege are few in number and difficult to obtain. Moreover, these drugs would be too expensive for the average thief to use.
The other important point to remember is that general anaesthetics are potentially very dangerous, which is why they are only administered in the UK by doctors who have undergone many years of postgraduate training in the subject and who remain with the unconscious patient throughout the anaesthetic. Unsupervised patients are likely to die from obstruction of the airway by their tongues falling back.
In the Moscow siege approximately 20% of the people died, many probably from airway obstruction directly related to the agent used. If there was a totally safe, odourless, potent, cheap anaesthetic agent available to thieves for this purpose it is likely the medical profession would know about it and be investigating its use in anaesthetic practice.

Ah! But there is a widely available product which has this effect on caravanners, rendering them unconscious and causing a sort of amnesia which makes them forget to lock doors and windows and fall into a deep sleep , thereby preventing them from weakening when Johnny Foreigner simply opens the door and walks in and helps himself.
Apparently it comes in 70cl bottles with such labels as "cotes du Rhone" or "Chateau Neuf"
Also causes them to conclude that they must have been gassed.
This gas should by used by law enforcement officers throughout the world to deal with armed sieges, prison riots, and the like.
Men have been known to use the product on women who willingly accept it too. Also available in white.

Oh no! theyre not wheeling out this old chestnut again?
Even 10 years ago the idea of people being gassed in their motorhomes was totally dissproved.

People may laugh at urban myths, but as Val A says, there have definitely been robberies, and it's easy to let your defences slip after a few glasses of vino.  The answer is to take sensible precautions.

I suspect like many of you that this is the old Daily Fascist alternative universe in operation again, but I'm so pleased to see so many of my fellow campers who hate this rag too. It has restored some of my faith in the British public.
