Bought a new Elddis Avante (special edition name is Chatsworth) from Glossop Caravans in June 2012.  I have had problems after problems.  To name a few:

- water heater control faulty

- 240v charger to battery not working

- some exterior damage/pint work poorly finished (that they didnt tell me about!)

- smell from fire when on gas (slight burning smell)

- alarm harness not even connected to main panel

- blown air heating doesnt even get hot to make any difference to the temperature

etc....

I got some of the above fixed at a more local dealer, Raymond James.  They were excellent and very friendly.  Didnt want to have to deal with Glossop if I could help it.

Glossop just didnt carry out their pre-checks, or did and ignored them!  On reflection of the conversation I had on the handover, they tried to cover up the problems by lying, just so that I drove the van away.

The spec was also not what was originally advertised .... the IDC was missing, and they told me you dont need Intelligent Brake Control on a small van like this .... it's 1.5 tonne in running order!

I guess I would say to others BE VERY VERY WEARY IF DEALING WITH GLOSSOP CARAVANS.  Dont let them fool you to just to get a sale.

I have sent a letter of complaint to the Service manager to see if he has anything to say, or suggest how I get the remianing faults fixed.

You have just blown any rectification work from Glossop as you have had some done elsewhere. That will nullify your guarantee from them. They can now disclaim any liability. If the manufacturer tells you to go elsewhere, then okay. Always go back to where you buy from and if there is no satisfaction, go to Trading Standards of your local council.

So why did you buy from this dealer if you have a more local Elddis dealer? Welcome to the Ukcs btw, if you had discovered this forum a few yrs ago I guess you would would not have bought the caravan from the dealer you mention.

As you have been a member for quite a while you would have been best to ask on here first to see what the general feedback was before even looking round their caravan stock but now it's a bit like closing the door after the horse has bolted. I certainly wouldn't buy from them as I know two people who have had a bad deal from Glossops in the past but basically they make you feel like a valued customer when viewing round but once they have your money they treat you very much like a door mat with muddy boots when problems arise. The best route to take now is to contact Elddis and complain to them and tell them how dis-satisfied you are. These dealers have a franchise with various manufacturers and if they get too many customer complaints they can take action and refuse to deal with them in the future.

I don't believe you 'blown' your warranty with Glossop, whilst your contract of sale is with them you don't need to have rectifications done at the supplying dealer, for instance if you buy a new car and it breaks while under warranty, you can have it fixed at any dealership you wish

Rather than writing to your dealer, I'd phone and arrange to return the van for them to fix, have you taken it back or spoken to them?

Personally, think I,d be inclined to park it in the main entrance on a weekend and inform any prospective buyers of any caravans how they operate.

Not exactly the same for caravans I'm affraid, as we were told by our Lunar Dealer and Lunar themselves.

I think you'll find it is, this is an extract from the Swift Caravan Warranty

In the unusual event that a fault develops and you need to claim under Body Shell Warranty or the SuperSure Warranty, your first contact should normally be made through the dealer from whom the caravan was purchased. If this is not feasible then a claim may be dealt with by a different authorised Swift Group Service Centre[

(Disclaimer: I'm a camper not a caravanner - just read this because it mentioned Glossop)
I'd double check that, I know with cars a warranty is valid as long as the work is done with VAT registered garage - do not have to take the car back to the dealer you bought it from or even to another main dealer for that brand.

We were sited on the next pitch to a very unhappy Glossop Caravans customer at West Ayton CC last week.

He had recently bought one of their 'dealer special' Coachman caravans, and just like the original poster on this thread, he had a list of faults and complaints regarding his new caravan similar to yours, and was still fighting them to get most of the problems resolved when we spoke to him. He stated that on handover the staff were just messing around laughing and joking with eachother, and when he pointed out things he wasnt happy about, they just told him to phone the service department the following week, not good when one obvious fault was a faulty bed mattress, which required a replacement and which took several weeks to arrive.

It is EU law that all car main dealers anywhere in the EU must do service & warranty work on that make of car regardless of who supplied it. Also new car buyers are free to have their car serviced at any non franchise vat reg. workshop without warranty being affected.

No such law exists for caravans. It is up to the manufacturer & their dealers how they deal with warranty & servicing. Provided Elddis require all their dealers to do warranty work on product regardless of who supplied it the op should have no problem getting faults rectified provided caravan has been serviced at correct interval.

The issue is more the other way round. Dealers are unwilling to do warranty work unless they have to (i.e. because they sold the van) as manufacturers often pay a lower labour rate for warranty work (and quote very short allowable repair times) than the dealer will charge for service work or work chargeable to the customer. External warranty work may only be fitted in when a dealer is quiet.
This is a massive advantage with Bailey & their Transient Warranty. Their website lists dealers who are willing to do warranty work on vans that they have not sold. Some authorised dealers (including where I have mine serviced & warranty work done) do not even sell caravans.
