Hi everyone,

I've already posted this on the TT & FC forum but thought some of you caravanners may be able to help as well!

I'm looking to but a used car, and quite like the idea of a vauxhall zafira... reading the motoring reviews though some people suggest that the 1.6litre petrol engine is a little underpowered, and as we're hopefully going to be towing a fc soon I didn't want to struggle to tow (especially as only other towing experience is with a 1.8TDi!).

Anyway so I've started looking at the 1.8 zafira, but these are far less common, and significantly more expensive... anyone out there who has towed with the 1.6 zafira tell me if I'm likely to regret the decision if I bought the smaller engined model?

I tow a Conway FC with a Zafira 1.8 which sometimes feels a bit underpowered around the hills etc but is OK really. I would not want to go down to the 1.6 engine though.

The Zafiras have got low legal towing capacities across the range, but the approx 200kg difference between most 1.6 and 1.8 might be vital depending on what you may want to tow at some point in the future.

My father in law towed his ABI Award Dawnstar 2 berth with a 1.6 Zafira and had no problems with it. Not sure what the weight of that van is though.

We had a Zafira 1.8 and towed an Avondale Dart 556/6.  It was on the tow limit but pulled well in most terrain.  Fuel consumption goes into the lower 20,s but what else do you expect!!  Do be careful of towing weights between the different models, a diesel can tow less than a petrol!
