Hi, I know there are lots of threads on here about covers but I'm hoping for the latest consesus of opinion please.
With an average breathable cover, has anyone suffered any damage to their van? I was wondering if windows and body could get scratched? I was also wondering if moisture or condensation could get trapped between the cover and the van causing problems?
Thanks

Caravans stay outside at factory & dealers all winter so why should you need to cover them? I would guess most 15-20yr old caravans have never been covered in their lives & they appear to have survived.

I am in the same boat as the OP.
We live near so many trees that if I don't cover the 'van it will be very green and sticky with much added bird lime by Spring.
Problem is - which one to get...

You can have the one in my garage which is onsale on this site for £50, came with our Abbey GTS 418 which is 7.3m overall. Looks a decent quality and I don't think that it has been used. Needs to be collected from North Lincs though.

I bought an unused cover from ebay, made by specialist caravans I think. It has bits you slide into the rails at either side to provide a bit of air and a gap between it and the caravan. I've heard of a few people improvising this with a couple of lengths of thin pipe lagging. It's breathable.
I used it all last winter and it did work very well. No condensation or damp at all. However I did follow the winterizing guidelines on this site as well.
Mine is a wee bit too small on the sides, so not all of the caravan is covered, however I have a peculiar shaped van anyway, so I think I got the best I could, without having to have one made bespoke which would have probably cost more than the caravan!
Nice to take it off in the spring - a quick dust over - and away you go!

Hi we have a protec caravan cover and are really pleased with it its pretty easy to get on and off. We have several blossom trees so we like to keep it covered. Interestingly, I was watching the Caravan Channel last week and they featured a company who strip down damp vans for customers and undertake the repairs. The owner of the company recommended that more caravanners should keep their vans covered but air them from time to time to keep all seals in top condition and help prevent damp issues. We also like the fact that any would be thieves can't see what make and model caravan we have from the roadside.

I have a PROTEC cover and wouldn`t be without it.
Keeps the van clean and adds a little bit of security in that no one can see in it and would also have to undo the cover to get at the door.

I have a cover which I think is a Protec, it has 4 layers and main reason for using it is to stop all the rubbich off the 2 big firs off it. Haven't had any problems with scratching or moisture and it actually helps it blend in with the trees and brushes so isn't easily spotted to the casual passer by.

We covered our van last year (I think the cover was a Kampa breathable one) kept the van in pristine condition no worry about condensation getting in. We changed our van this year and have just ordered a Protect cover for it at the show. I think a cover is worthwhile as it keeps the van clean and keeps all the leaves, snow and other rubbish off it. When you take the cover off in the spring your pride and joy is ready to go

Can I ask what problems you had jeff?
As on another thread i said i covered the van with one,,first time in all my years of caravaning. The van was well ventilated but i think what caused the trouble was that the air in side was hot from the sun during the day and when it cooled at night it caused condessation. The water was dripping from the ceiling and the furniture felt damp.Others seem not to have this prob with them then again it might be the Scottish weather. This was one winter.

Thanks Hubby in favour as we have to keep van at MILs so can't check it too regularly throughout winter so the jury's still out.
