1st I would just like to introduce myself. This site has been recomended by a fellow user.I've been looking for ages and now plucked up courage to post.
My wife and I are buying a new to us caravan. It's a cat D insurance write off.It has been damaged by hailstones, but never been reparied.Cosmetic damage only.
How do we go about insuring it.I've spoken to a couple of insurances and they say they want a engineers report. But a friend has told me unless it's repaired I can't insure it.Does anyboy know about this.
Hi your best bet is to speak to the insurance company who may agree to insure it for a reduced figure as it is damaged.
Have you had a quote to re-skin the roof as i pressume this is where it is damaged this is the easiest part to replace as it can be placed/bonded on top of the original and should satisfy the insurance company.
Hope this is helpful.

The damage is on the side.It doesn't bother us,it's awning side.CRIS have told us it is road worthy and just cosmetic. You would think that the insurance company would accept that.I can't understand why they need a engineers report when CRIS have the info!
They want an engineers report to make sure the vehicle is safe sound and road worthy if it was a cat d car you need to mot after repairs before you can get it back on the road probably similar situation but there is no mot for caravans i would expect a similar fee to an mot. Check with ins company if your local caravan dealers report is ok,then just find the most ameniable.
Possibly yes, just be honest with the insurance company & see what they say.
You might have better luck going through a broker or through one of the two big clubs as they have probably dealt with this before.
Good luck !
An engineers report is no problem, any caravan workshop would do that, for a smallish fee.
Theres no legal requirement to insure a caravan btw. All car insurances cover you for third party risks on caravan/trailer while towing. To get crash damaged repaired on the caravan it needs to be insured, but if you aint paying a great deal for the caravan it might not be worth the hassle to get it insured as you can still tow it, anyway.
It might be good to check with your car insurance tho to find out if you are covered for towing a written off caravan, you might not be.
Seems a lot to pay for a damaged 'van. The only way then is to get an engineers report, maybe you could just get a small amount of the damage repaired then the report will at least say repairs have been done & hopefully satisfy the insurance co.
The bodywork is damaged so they wont offer any repairs on that. Insurance company probably got less than £1000 for it after the costs are added up.
Brother in law had a old fiesta a while back & someone drove into the back of him. The damage was very minor but the insurance wrote it off. He enquired about keeping it they said thats fine knocked £75 off his payout & he could keep the car. He had to get a fresh MOT to prove its still road legal and they would only insure it 3rd party only. Not even fire & theft.

It's £7000,it's a 2004 Elddis twin axle.A real good price because of the damage.I need to insure it.
I agree it sound a lot of money for a 2004 van & its damaged I suggest you ask one of the clubs or another dealer for a glass's guide price for the model van
yes there is a glass's for caravans
you can get good advice from either of the clubs websites
Got a similar situation with a hail damaged cat "D" caravan myself and have got a broker onto it at the minute.
It would seem that this is another type of underground insurance paranoia, I really dont see the issue the insurance companys have, all is want is third party fire an theft on a caravan that has lots of little dents on it, and I dont expect them to cover it for 10k any more just 3k if someone nicks it or it sets on fire, which is its actual value...they said so, because thats what they charged me to buy it back off them.
As for certificates a cat "C" needs an engineers report as wiith a cat "C" car, cat "D" do not need anything as with a car, not even an MOT (unless it has ran out or did not have one in the first place) if a vehicle was damaged in a way that it could be cosidered unradworthy it would be catagarised as a cat "C"
I'll let you know if the broker comes up with something.
I certainly would not be paying £7000 for a Cat D write off. This one on eBay at least comes with a warranty and is the same year. Seems yours may not be such a good bargain after all.
