Hi we are new to caravaning ( used to have a trailer tent) and the awning that came with our Elddis Typhoon 1994 was too big. Anyway we have measursed the height of the awning rail which is 225 cm. My partner wants one of the curved porch awnings instead of a full awning. But the problem is the curved porch awnings rail height start from 230 cm. Has anybody got one of these on an older van and if so does it seem to sit fine when pitched. We just dont want to waste our money on one if it wont sit right. Any advice would be greatly received. Thanks Laura
I used to use a Porchlite XL on a 1991 Avondale and never had a problem with it. I never managed to get the full awning to fit properly because as I later found out the Avondale roof line was lower than most caravans.

Thanks for that. We have the straight length for one on the rail. Also when we looked at new vans they are higher than ours. we have seen some to fit rail heights of 230 cm so we might just go for it if other people have had no probs. There are some on preloved cheap so we might not loose out anyway. Thanks
For 5cm I would get one and try it. If you think it is a bit too tall for the rail you could always carry a couple of 5cm planks and drive the van up onto those to increase the height of the rail from the ground.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Good idea theres some in the van already. We havent took it away yet because of this awning malarky so sounds like an option. The leg winders should go down further aswell I take it.

Yes but you could put blocks under those as well.

Though not a light weight bent pole awning the old Isabella Combis were very well suited for the low awning rails of yesteryear.
These came in two sizes, generally the wider one being a more useful size. They also came with steel and lighter GRP [IXL} poles, the latter being a much easier option to live with.[Weight rust etc]
You should find them on eBay and with the progressive loss of a market for them then the prices should be irresistible for what is a very good product. The construction does not degrade so quickly over time as the light weight fabric do.
We did think of these aswell. But I think he really wants one with the bendy poles as they are lightweight and easier to put up. I did see an Issabella combi on Ebay they do look nice aswell. Probably last a lifetime to!
They are very easy to put up, much easier than anything else IMO.

Having had 3 awnings in the last few years; a full awning on our previous caravan that never really fitted properly (see previous post) a porchlite XL which was almost as big as the full awning and a conventional square porch awning that came with our current caravan, I would never have a full awning again.
As for putting up the porchlite XL (the round one with the bent poles) and the standard square porch awning then there's not much to choose between them but if anything the square one is a bit easier. And to put that into perspective, it came with our second hand caravan so had no instructions and still I find it easier than the Porchlite XL although when folded up the Porchlite XL fits into a holdall which came with it, poles and all and even has the instructions stitched into it whereas the square porch awning takes up three times the room when folded up.
We have used the Porchlite XL in pretty strong winds, but it has popped inside out on us a couple of times, despite coming with storm straps, trapping us inside the caravan until I climbed out the window on the other side to pop it back out so for winter use I would go with the square porch awning or none at all.
A few friends of ours have changed their full awnings for these as they will fir any similar sized caravan they don't have to buy a new awning when they change their caravan and have just as much room inside with the convenience of a porch awning.
I have just looked at the ultima. I think we will go Jacksons at the weekend as they have both on display so we can have a good touch and feel. Also ma n pa will chip in for early xmas prezzie!
