Just heard European Parliament are voting on 2nd July to create a law which means all UK Caravans will have to be MOT'd. According to UK statistics, there is absolutely no evidence that this will reduce caravan accidents (as they tend to be caused by overloading or excess speed) and will just be a money making exercise in a time when all our finances are already stretched.
There is a petition at http://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/force-eu-to-abandon-mot-s-for-caravans
which is a simple click to sign and just before the vote will be emailed to the chair of the EU Committee for Transport. Or you could email your local MEP or do both.

Thanks.
Can you please provide a link to this legislation?
I don't necessarily see a problem with it so will not be signing. If the owner of a caravan has difficulty with the cost it is likely that maintenance will be neglected anyway.
What's to worry about, if you service your every year etc etc, it will pass no problem, how much we taking £50 ish like a car. Peace of mind also that it has been checked over.
Thinking about it, a old caravan that hasn't been service doing 60mph is as dangerous as a car with no mot doing 60 so I think its a good idea.
Most EU countries have Mot's on their cars every 2yrs after the first 4yrs & those that already Mot caravans like Germany, also do so every 2yrs. I would guess the Germans for example spend less on their caravan maintenance than owners in the UK. They service & Mot their 'vans every 2yrs whereas in the UK the requirement for new 'vans to maintain warranty is service every yr which is not really necessary.
The difference is that German caravans are serviced/Mot every 2yrs through out their lives by law whereas UK caravans once they get older are sometimes not serviced at all. The German system is sensible but if caravan Mots are introduced in the UK, no doubt the requirement will be every yr which is unecessary as is an annual service.
Provided the German system of 2yr service/Mot intervals is introduced in UK then it would be a good thing, but it is not necessary annually imho.
However, if you do a bit of googling, it does appear that there are no actual plans to introduce caravan Mots in UK anytime soon, so unlikely to happen imho. Most EU countries do not in fact Mot their caravans. Holland & France for example do not Mot caravans although they do register them as vehicles with their own number plates unlike the UK. Registration of caravans by the DVLA in the UK would help cut down theft as it would be more difficult to use stolen caravans on the road as they would have to display their own numberplates as in France etc.
I seem to remember this link coming up on 1st April. It will never happen, and even if it did, it would be unenforceable in the present economic climate.
If it applies to trailers as well.,don't see the problem. We have a duty to keep a vehicle in a roadworthy condition.Surely a caravan with a valid test would give some peace of mind on resale?
I often wonder if anyone actually takes any notice of a petition anyway!
------------- DS-There's more to life than football!!!
Responsible folk get them serviced every year - and at a cost, so where is the issue re MOTs? Just because it is the EU does not make it bad policy. Overdue in my opinion.
Yep and it'll be exactly the same as a car MOT it won't guarantee the roadworthyness of the vehicle. What's the phrase " the items were in serviceable condition at the time of testing" and how many cars are on the road with an MOT that have iffy tyres or other defects? An MOT is no guarantee of a safe well maintained vehicle of any description.
