Hi all,

I am new to caravaning and have a twin axle van. I have been leveling it using the corner steadies, as I was led to believe they were heavy duty and for this purpose. Is this correct or am I doing it completely wrong. Any help/advise please ?

Nooooo! the corner steadies are no stronger than the ones fitted to single axles and should never be used to lift and level the van.

You should invest in some wedges and chocks to put under the wheels of the caravan and pull the van onto them, unless you want to buy the proper wheel lift for the job.

You should NOT use the steadies for levelling!  Once on your pitch use the jockey wheel to level up, then lower the steadies.   If you are squint sideways you need to put a ramp or piece of board under the low wheel.

Once you are happy with the position, then you lower the steadies.

Willow,

You're doing it wrong mate! To level it correctly you need to pull it up onto some wooden blocks to get it level side to side. Has to be a bit of trial and error involved I'm afraid! Make sure you have plenty of different thicknesses of chocks and remember that you will need twice as many as a single axle. You need to use wooden blocks as the pre-formed plastic chocks will only go under one wheel (you can't get a second one in between the two wheels) which doesn't give much lift on the lowest side of the van.

If like me, you have the Alko wheel clamps, the whole thing gets a bit precarious as the handbrake needs to come off to line the slots in the wheels up correctly

Once you're happy, level front to back using the jockey wheel then wind down the steadies.

Hope this helps. If you need anymore help just shout!

Steve.

Thanks a lot guys. I had been looking at the leveling blocks but didnt know how you got them under a twin axle. Would I be able to use a bottle jack to lift the van to put blocks under and if so can I put them anywhere on the chassis. Its just that with the van being so long, theres not always room to shunt it back and forth on to blocks.

You could place the chocks under the axle beam.

Do not use a jack on an Alko chassis, only use the jacking points.  This is a bracket that is bolted to the side of the chassis either in front of the front wheel or behind the rear wheel.

As for the plastic levelling blocks, cut both of them down at the thin end so they'll fit between front and rear wheels and chamfer the cut edge.
