1 Reviews of the Kaaiman

By: Forwhatitsworth  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2011   Rating:

A growing family meant that our beloved pyramid tents were becoming a bit impractical for longer trips, so I began looking into a quality canvas tunnel type tent for our main holidays.

The options were pretty thin on the ground and included a Cabanon Awaya (too dull), a Bear or Wolf Lake (too many quality control issues) or one of the Obelink/Hypercamp tunnels (would need to travel to Holland to chose the best one!). Having already owned an ESVO tent I decided to go for their largest offering, the 6 berth Kaaiman.

Ordering directly from the ESVO website couldn't have been easier and free delivery to the UK took 5 days. The first thing to point out is the pack size which (despite what it says on the website) consists of three bags (tent, inner and poles) weighing a total of 68kgs. The weight could be real problem if ever you needed to pack it up soaking wet (not to mention the need to put it back up again when you get home!).

Despite the sheer bulk and the large footprint, the tent is surprisingly simple and quick to pitch. Just peg out the SIG nice and tight then working from the front, zip in the four internal poles. Then its just a case of pegging the bottom of the tent out to get everything nice and neat! I spent 40 minutes on it's first pitch, but reckon you could easily shave 10 minutes off that (if not more!).

Once pitched, you are left with a very spacious living area, a single inner which sleeps six and can be divided into three if required, and a large sheltered front porch area which really protects the front of the tent from the elements! The windows are very large, all of which have thick canvas curtains which zip up from the inside, and both the front doors and front two side windows have a half mesh panel for ventilation. The whole of the front panel can also be zipped open in good weather.

The quality of the canvas (320 gr./m² Ten Cate) and the stitching is brilliant, you feel very safe and secure and can tell you are in a really high quality tent.

Depending on the exchange rate the tent costs around £1350, which is a fair few hundred pounds cheaper than the similar (but IMHO not as attractive) Cabanon Awaya, and only a little more expensive than the larger Outwell Lakes (Clear, Wolf 7 etc), yet is handmade from real cotton canvas! For me it was a no brainer, and i'm delighted with it!

In summary, a really spacious quality tent, which if looked after will last a lifetime of camping!
